I don't think mp3 players are fully going away any time soon but they are definitely not a particularly popular product now because so many other devices (specifically phones) offer the same functionality. Apple didn't invent the mp3 player and they were not the last or only company making mp3 players, it is a useless exaggeration to suggest that the ipod was the only mp3 player out there and the category is now dead with its passing.
I still use (when I go camping and want a stereo these days) the only dedicated mp3 player I ever bought. It is a Creative Zen Touch (20GB) and after ten years of use it is an ugly and damaged thing but it still works great.
