Developing Your Firefighters

Training for the real thing photo

Another thing I've never understood is "down time". What is this "down time"? Do these firefighters and officers know their job functions, their response district, the fire risks in that district, etc., so well that there is no need for training, drilling, touring, pre-planning, etc.? As a Company Officer, how much time are you devoting each tour-of-duty to those four important human capital development tasks?

9/11 – Thirteen Years of Remembrance, Perseverance, and Preparation

As news correspondent, Dan Rather, stated later in the afternoon that fateful day, the 11th of September, 2001 started out as a “crisp September morning, under clear blue skies… then terror struck”. 9/11 would become the proper nomenclature to identify the both the day and the event, that every American spanning four generations would recognize. It would symbolize many things to many people from every corner of the world. Both sides of the conflict would declare a victory, neither of them an absolute. The events of that day taught us things that had long been forgotten. It taught us that we could stand together in difficult times and honor the line from The Pledge of Allegiance, “One nation, under God, indivisible”. Tireless years later, thanks to the brave men of SEAL Team Six, and our intelligence communities, they declared with the statement “For God and Country…Geronimo” that the most wanted man in the world since Adolf Hitler had been killed.

Flags, Stickers, and the Same Old Same Old

Today’s burning question #1: My fire chief is an imbecile. He has suspended a bunch of us (myself included) because we refused to remove American flag decals from our fire helmets and lockers. Its really pretty typical of our idiotic chief. He doesn't support us ... Today’s burning question #2: I am a fire chief and received a complaint about inappropriate and offensive photos and stickers on lockers and helmets.

This house fire in Greeley, CO shows the capacity of a single engine company on a house fire. It does not appear that other crews make it to the scene until later in the video. However, as great a job as they do with the minimum manpower they have on scene, they are not afforded the ability to do other important tasks that must be carried out like a search (from what we see in the video). I am certain that the crews who arrive later in the video helped the guys operating finish the task. Great job guys!
