I remember Amalgamated Bank from years ago when they just had the one place on Union Square. A professor at Baruch talked me into opening an account there because they had no checking fee etc.
Then he got hit with charges to his account which didn't add up and checks bounced and he became the biggest enemy of the place imaginable.
Who really likes banks anyway, except the people who own them?
I wonder what people will say about Amalgamated now--well, they say nothing about this place and they do not like the other branches except for the Amalgamated Bank in California, which may not be the same company altogether anyway!
What can I say? You just have to shop around for banks and hope for the best.
