Anjappar Indian Restaurant

I like picking these places at random when they look OK and then seeing what the reviews are like but my last business post tonight right after this is just going to be Yelp's favorite Indian restaurants in Manhattan ( this probably is not one of them, but who knows).

By the way, in this area where you find Anjappar you also find a bunch of other Indian restaurants, some vegetarian, one I saw was kosher too.

On to Yelp-Well, whaddya know, people really like this place

I can't speak for the north indian dishes, but i had the:

    (a) Rasam - delicious. I'm a south indian, and found it very spicy, so beware. but delicious.

    (b) masala dosa - very nicely done, and i wish there was more. the chutneys, and 'gun powder' are exceptional.

the food is phenomenal - go for that.

Before I begin I have to say I go here all the time because it is just impossible to get non-veg south Indian food in the U.S.

The service here is garbage. I mean its just awful how understaffed and under trained  people here are. They are always struggling to get food out in time and it just makes me mad.

Having said that food is delicious but has ups and downs. Sometimes they bring out cold food which has been sitting in the kitchen for 10-15 minutes.

Chettinad Chicken curry is legendary and so is the paratha. Crab, Keema dosa, mutton dry are also my favorites. Chicken 65 is mediocre but I do get it sometimes.

Overall food is delish and service is awful!

I'mma let you finish but the fish thali at Anjappar deserves all the prizes.

Holy hell. The king fish curry here is BOMB. I loved every bite of it - it was spicy, just as requested, and man oh man did it hit the spot. I was craving homestyle Indian fish curry for a while, and Anjappar more than delivered.

The thali overall was good too. It had the standard papad, rasam, rice package...but again, the real star of the show was that curry.

If you're not ravenous, I would just recommend the king fish curry by itself. The thali, though a pretty solid price (18.99), might be too much for a day where you've actually eaten other things. I know thats my plan for tonight!!!

Veg kothu paratha is good. Gulabjamun not worth it.
My friends who had non-veg dishes said they could hardly make out any difference between 2 different chicken dishes.

This is absolutely some of the best South Indian food I've had, especially in New York. They even do North Indian curries better than the majority of the good North Indian restaurants anywhere (e.g., the typical "Indian restaurant" menu).  The flavors are intricate and full, the spicy dishes are properly spiced and flavored, the heavier and more buttery Northern dishes aren't drowned in butter and cream.

On top of the amazing food, the staff are also very nice and the service has been great every time I have gone. Overall, definitely one of the best restaurants in the Curry Hill area, without a doubt.

If you haven't had South Indian cuisine, do give it a try - you are in for one delicious surprise!

Cozy atmosphere, quiet and friendly staff.

Dinner at Anjappar last night was superb. This was my first time having Indian in years and it  definitely surpassed all my expectations. They exclusively serve South Indian cuisine so be open minded when reading over the menu. I had a tough time deciding but the staff was very helpful and helped make choosing a dish simple. I'd definitely go back because the food was tasty, spicy and interesting. Indian food is something totally different for me, but Anjappar's menu is very enticing.

The food was really good.  I don't know what most of it was, though.  The service was very rushed and brusque.  I felt like I was being snubbed for not knowing anything about south Indian food.  That said, I'd like to go back and try something else, because everything I had was tasty.

I love Indian Food! And this place definitely doesn't disappoint. However, coming from the Bay Area, I feel that the Indian food in the Bay Area is better and I couldn't help but compare all of the places I've been to to this place. However, I did enjoy my meal and if you look at the rest of my reviews, you'll know that a 3-star review is not a bad thing for me. When I come back to visit NYC, I will come back here because I did enjoy their parottas. So good!

I do recommend this place as I guess it's one of the better Indian Food options in the city that isn't too expensive.

This is an amazing South Indian restaurant. Restaurant specialty is South Indian meat and seafood dishes however there are plenty of options for a vegetarian like me.

For appetizers we got the Mushroom 65 and Gobi 65. These peculiarly named appetizers were delicious! The mushrooms and cauliflower were made with a special South Indian flavors and lightly fried. My entree was the Kathirikkai Kolambu, small eggplants cooked in a South Indian masala.

Our desserts were payasum, pineapple rava kesari, and gulabjamun with ice cream. The desserts good. I will definitely order the gulabjamun with ice cream again.

    3.5 stars.

Perhaps Anjappar needs to warn unsuspecting customers, "Beware, spicy food".

Yes, all that is said about the food is true - they throw the chillies into the dishes with gay abandon. But if the reputation of the Chettiars is anything to go by, they never promised to go easy on the heat. Chettinad cuisine is famous for being a) meat centric and b)spicy! I even know some people who can't even tell flavours in a dish unless it has been sufficiently peppered with.. you know.. chilli peppers. It's just the way it works with some parts of India.

Having said that, I can hardly criticize Anjappar for making food that makes my eyes and nose water while I eat it. And water they did. However, through the spice, I did think that some dishes stood out - the poondu kozhambu and the mottai curry (egg curry) were a great combination with rice. It's something quite inherently south Indian, but something that would never be made in a household like mine (that eschews eggs and garlic).

Among the steamed dishes, I thought that the kuzhipaniyaram, a mouthful to say but tiny little savoury ebelskiver like pancakes, with their assorted chutneys are delicious. The appam, while not an everyday commodity here (twice I've been told they don't have the dish) is a sight to behold. A huge basket of steamed dough that has bubbled with fermentation, the center is idli like and the lacy edges are like dosa. This is served with a korma and sweetened coconut milk, which is more dessert than anything else. So if you like your food with less heat and would still like to try Anjappar, I recommend the Appam. Alternatively you could go with the Parotta+Kurma, a flaky bread instead of the yeasted appam.

But with the above hits, there are several misses as well. On one occasion, I ordered the vegetarian thali, only to discover that it lags behind my other favourite thali both in quality and quantity. Each dish was rather underwhelming, and the whole didn't sum up to more than its underwhelming parts. The dosas here are okay, a bit on the greasier end of the spectrum.

When I am at Anjappar next, I will remember to skip my favourite part of the meal - Anjappar's dessert are just so mediocre that I hardly feel like commenting about them here. The ice creams are store bought and reek of artificial flavourings, and the gulab jamun is much too sweet. That's too bad, because if they had halfway decent desserts they would be ensured business, given the spice level of the food here.

The main gripe I have with Anjappar is the service. It's consistently been spotty, slow, generally unaccomodative and not particularly friendly. I might still go back here for the 3-4 dishes that I like, but I don't think I'll be a regular customer.

    --VEGETARIAN REVIEWER--

People may laugh if vegetarians come to a Chettinad cuisine, for its specialties are its fish and meat. But I was pleasantly surprised to see vegetarians like me have plenty of choices.

After a long day of walking in the Met, I decided to indulge my taste buds and ordered their thali, and since the other guys around me were ordering parotas, I ordered one too. Best decision I ever made. The thali was wonderful! (The thali is a plate with all kinds of foods in bowls - all the gravies, rice, and vegetables.) And there was plenty of food on it too. No complaints about the food taste overall. One special star for the beetroot halwa (dessert) on the plate. Was simply outstanding. Just the right amount of sweet and reminded me of my aunt who always makes it for me especially.

The other guys ordered a poondu kozhambu (garlic gravy - which is nowhere near as bad as it sounds) in the end for second round, which was good too, but not great.

One star down for the mushroom gravy I was served in the thali. Only because I don't like mushrooms and it wasn't a nice surprise and it was on the saltier side. Price is average for this area, and I wouldn't necessarily order the parota-gravy combination (that my friend ordered and which I would have ideally wanted) because there's not much value for the money for it.

great service, tasty & authentic food, but very expensive.
The waiters and servers here are really good at recommending dishes, and encourage you to try new dishes, which I appreciate. We were about to order chicken tikki masala, but the waiter kind of laughed and said "if you want to try real South Indian food, you should try something you've never had before!! Try Iddiapam!" and try it we did. Deliciousness ensued. My wallet was not happy, but my tastebuds were. hahah!
If you know you have a high spicy-ness tolerance level, then go forth. But if you don't, be cautious, some dishes are super spicy (as expected)!  :)

Service was a little slow, BUT they have some pretty legit-tasting Indian food!

They have a hilariously-named Business Executive Lunch Special, which isn't too bad in terms of price vs food. It comes out on this really interesting circular metal tray with everything split into separate bowls.

Everything tasted pretty great and I had massive food coma afterwards, so extra points in my book. Likely coming back for lunch again someday!

Chettinad cuisine has been the best kept secret in Indian food, with its effective use of fiery spices and variety of non-veg dishes, for a long time.

Anjappar has been one of the best (along with Ponnuswamy) chettinad restaurants in Madras for a while and I'm so glad that they are finally here in NYC. The food isn't as hot as it is in Madras; which is a good thing. But its just as flavorful. If you are new to South Indian food, not adventerous and/or vegetarian you may want to look elsewhere. For everyone else you are in for a royal treat.

I do take outs, so can't comment about dining in. Recommended dishes:
    Biriyani
    Prawn Masala
    Parrotta kurma
