New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed Nicholas Scoppetta the 31st Commissioner of the Fire Department of New York in January 2002, a position which he held until January 1, 2010. “There was a 3-foot wall in between EMT Montalvo, myself, and the patient, who was threatening to jump. We knew we needed to help. We climbed out over the ledge of the roof and onto the fire escape. I put my arm around the patient’s torso, and EMT Montalvo grabbed the patient’s arm and waist.
