Staten Island WWII veterans honored in Manhattan
NEW YORK, N.Y. – More than 150 guests gathered at the River Club in midtown Manhatten for an event paying tribute to military veterans from Staten Island who fought in the Battle of the Bulge 70 years ago during World War II.
Five of the six Island-Chapter 52 Veterans being honored were in attendance for the "Welcome Home, Boy!" night festivities.
Veterans Roger Acker; Carmine "Buzz" Burzamato; Gene Gagliardi; Ed Petrozullo and Joe Reilly enjoyed a video montage, provided by the grandson of General George S. Patton, Banjamin Patton. Roy Ferlazzo was not present.
"These wonderful days aren't the only days we should think about veterans and their families," said Patton. "We should recognize them everyday."
William Abell, President of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Staten Island-Chapter, said this event is important to the legacy of each man involved in the Battle of the Bulge.
"These guys have stories that need to be heard," said Abell, whose father served during the historic battle with those who were honored.
The Battle of the Bulge took place between December 1944 and January 1945, and helped to lead a few months later to the end of WWII.
