August 2015 Monthly Update |
A Message from Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell
Dear Neighbor,
My annual Summer Health Fair at General Ulysses S.Grant Houses (1320 Amsterdam Avenue) is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2015 from noon to 3 p.m. I am pleased to announce that the Italian-American Cancer Society is offering the mammograms. To sign up, please call their offices at (877) 628-9090. If you have any questions about the Health Fair, do not hesitate to call my Community Office at (212) 866-3970.
On another note, I am honored that three publications have published my thoughts regarding criminal justice and police & prison reform. You can read my letter to the editor of the New York Times regarding contraband in prisons and jails here. You can also read my op-ed and letter featured in the Wall Street Journal regarding higher education opportunities for the incarcerated here. Finally, I invite you to access my commentary in the Albany Times Union about prison reform in New York State here. I commend President Obama for highlighting criminal justice reform in the past weeks, thus making it a matter of national attention. I believe that true reform consists of decreasing the prison population, improving conditions for people in prison, and improving mechanisms for people to leave prison, avoid recidivism, and integrate into our society. I pledge to continue working to advance this agenda.
Summer time in New York City is filled with a variety of opportunities to beat the heat and take advantage of free activities and events. This month I encourage you to continue exploring everything the Upper West Side has to offer with your friends and family, but make sure you do so in a safe manner. The extreme heat and high humidity of the summer poses a dangerous risk to all New Yorkers. These temperatures are especially threatening to the elderly, infants, and young children. Remember to seek air-conditioned locations, stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and to check on family members, friends, neighbors and pets.
I invite you to take this time to review the list of free activities and events happening all throughout the district this month. From free theatre performances to art classes and museum exhibits, there are many ways to enjoy August in NYC!
Very truly yours,
Daniel O'Donnell
Assembly Member
