ILLINOIS FIRE APPARATUS ROLLS OVER WHILE RESPONDING 

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    The Zeigler (IL) Fire Department says a fire truck was involved in a rollover crash on Tuesday morning, Aug. 11 while responding to a fire.
They say all six firefighters on board were taken to an area hospital.
According to the fire department, the truck captain was pinned until crews could arrive to remove her. She was flown via helicopter to a trauma center as a precaution.
They say all personnel involved have been treated and released.
The fire department posted on Facebook that they are "beyond thankful for all of your prayers and support. We are especially thankful for our brothers and sisters in public safety who came to our rescue."
They said, "The community support and outpouring from our public safety brothers and sisters across the state has been a blessing. Thank you all again."
The fire truck was the only vehicle involved.
According to the fire department, the truck was moving at a slow speed when the rollover happened. They say it ... [ more ]
     

 

UPDATE: MIAMI APPARATUS CRASH

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    Firefighters ended up in the hospital after a fire truck and a rescue ambulance collided in Miami Tuesday afternoon.Authorities said they crashed near Northwest 12th Ave and 14th Street.

Firefighters said their fire engine, from nearby station 5, was heading North on 12th avenue responding to a fire, when it crashed into the fire rescue truck from the same station that was transporting a grandmother and her two grandchildren to University of Miami Hospital.

Daniel Bosch said he was in fire truck when it crashed.

“We just crashed,” the boy told CBS4’s Lauren Pastrana. “The windows broke and we just started spinning around.”

The boy, whose little sister was also hurt, said he needed four stitches.

“The next thing you know I see the guy flying this way. I didn’t know what happened and I banged my head. I was bleeding,” he said.

DETAILS EMERGE ON FF INJURY AT RAILROAD TRESTLE IN OR

Wednesday, August 12, 2015   Details have been released about how a Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighter was injured while attempting to help put out a large fire that destroyed a railroad trestle and burned through Monday night and into Tuesday in Sherwood.The firefighter's name was not released, but in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, TVF&R said that the firefighter was working on a berm near the rail line at about 6 a.m. when two logs that had fallen from the trestle shifted, rolling down the hill and pinning the man's leg.

FIRE DEPARTMENTS & BODY ARMOR ( Ohio) 

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    As violent calls increase for firefighters and paramedics, more jurisdictions are beginning to add an extra level of protection.Departments in Clayton, Vandalia, and Harrison Township have begun equipping crews with body armor to protect responding units into potentially dangerous scenes.

Battalion Chief Sean McNeil with the Harrison Township Fire Department said about a fourth of the department has vests available to them, and have been helpful on more than one occasion.

“We’ve actually had instances where we’ve been treating a patient and the actual shooter was in crowd near the medic unit,” McNeil said.

McNeil adds other national stories have shown needs for protection for first responders.

“It happened in Florida, where police officers at a house on fire engaged the gunman with the fire department in the middle of it,” he said.

ENGINE vs. AMBULANCE RESPONDING CRASH IN MIAMI FL - 12 INJURED

Wednesday, August 12, 2015   Rescue crews rushed firefighters to the hospital after a fire truck and a rescue ambulance collided in Miami Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities said they crashed near 12th Ave and 13th Street.
Firefighters say their fire engine from nearby station 5 was heading North on 12th avenue responding to a fire, when it crashed into the fire rescue truck from the same station that was transporting a grandmother and her two grandchildren to University of Miami Hospital.
The impact was so severe, it smashed the front end of the rescue truck and caused the fire engine to spin, and then flip over on its side.
“We saw the fire truck pass us. The next thing we heard was a popping bang sound,” said witness Joanna Brown.
“It sounded absolutely horrible. You could hear the grinding twisting metal and a big boom,” said witness Sally Matson.

SECRET RECORDINGS REVEAL SAFETY CONCERNS ABOUT HARTFORD CT FD

Wednesday, August 12, 2015   In secret audio recordings obtained exclusively by Fox CT, Hartford Fire Chief Carlos Huertas reveals concerns with a lack of resources and cooperation with City Hall during an hour-long conversation with Deputy Chief Dan Nolan.
“There’s so much s— I want to change. I got a list that you wouldn’t believe. And, I’ll tell you right now, I’ll present it to the mayor and the council and they’re going to say no f—— way in hell,” Huertas said in the profanity-laced dialogue.

In the recording, Huertas references an issue with building inspections in the city. He tells Nolan that he and Deputy Chief Roger Martin, the fire marshal, have been vocal that buildings are not being inspected, presenting a possible safety hazard.

3 FFs INJURED AT CA BRUSH FIRE 

Tuesday, August 11, 2015   A brush fire that erupted near Anza quickly grew to 500 acres and forced a full closure of a highway.Three firefighters have been injured battling the blaze, Riverside County Fire's Jody Hageman told KPCC. The Red Cross has opened an evacuation center at Hamilton High School in Anza for people evacuated due to the fire.

In an update at 3:47 p.m., the Riverside County Fire Department, which is battling the blaze with help from Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, said the blaze was ten percent contained. 353 firefighters are battling the Anza Fire.

The fire began when flames from a motor home fire along Highway 74 east of Highway 371 spread to nearby vegetation.
     

 

Fire Pilots’ Families Say Cal Fire Owes Them LODD Benefits 

Tuesday, August 11, 2015   For nearly a dozen years, top officials at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection knowingly withheld death benefits from the families of 14 contracted firefighter pilots killed in the line of duty, according to a claim that seeks more than $4 million plus interest for the survivors.Since 2002, the claim filed late Friday alleges, “high level executives of Cal Fire, including the current director of Cal Fire, the current deputy director of Cal Fire (and their predecessors) ... engaged in a pattern of deceit and deception specifically designed to hide the existence of (the benefit) from the survivors and dissuade them from seeking any such death benefit from Cal Fire.”

Cal Fire spokeswoman Janet Upton said in an email Sunday that the department has not yet formally received the claim, but “has been working on benefits” for survivors of Geoffrey Hunt, a contracted pilot killed last October.

WV FF INJURED IN HIT AND RUN CRASH

Tuesday, August 11, 2015   A Milton volunteer firefighter remains in the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in front of the station Sunday night.Harold Goodall, 44, was hit about 11:15 p.m. as he was crossing the road to get a cup of coffee, according to Milton Police.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, Michael Casey, did not stop following the accident. He was located at a nearby home about two hours after the accident.

The driver has been charged with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident causing injury.

Milton Fire Department Engineer Reed Cook says considering what could've happened, a misdemeanor doesn't feel like enough.

"If you hit somebody and you keep on going, I think it should be more than a misdemeanor," Cook said. "To me, it ought to be a felony."

Cook tells WSAZ Goodall has a back injury and a broken pelvis.

Casey was arraigned and released on bond Monday.
     

 

APPARATUS STRUCK BY DRUNK DRIVER IN ROCHESTER NY 

Monday, August 10, 2015   A Rochester fire truck was struck by a drunk driver early this morning on Lake Avenue.Police say the truck was driving south on Lake Avenue shortly after 2 a.m. Monday when the speeding car struck the fire truck from behind, then another car.

The driver of the car faces DWI charges. No one was injured in the crash.
     

 

BRUSH TRUCK ROLLOVER RESPONDING IN WA 

Monday, August 10, 2015   A fire truck was involved in a rollover accident while responding to a brush fire in rural Douglas County on Friday evening.Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal said the brush truck, a Ford F550, went off the road, struck a boulder and then rolled completely over. Two firefighters inside suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The accident happened just outside of Bridgeport, and the truck was from Douglas County Fire District 3 out of the Grand Coulee area.

Numerous fire agencies from Chelan and Douglas counties responded after a fire near the top of McNeil Canyon Road quickly went to a second alarm.

The fire was started from a combine harvesting wheat near the intersection of Road 13 NW and Highway 172, said Tyler Caille, chief of Douglas County Fire District 5.

Driven by wind, the blaze grew to 100 acres -- and came within a half mile of one home -- before it was contained around 7:30 p.m.

21 YEAR OLD FIREFIGHTER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY (UPDATE)

Monday, August 10, 2015    It was a 21 year-old Firefighter from Shingle Springs, Calif., who died in the Line of Duty Saturday afternoon as a result of injuries received while suppressing a wildfire on the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) in northern California.

Firefighter Michael “Mike” Hallenbeck was a member of Organized Crew 36 on the LTBMU.
FF Hallenbeck was struck by a tree at approximately 1730 hours during the initial attack on the Sierra Fire, just inside the LTBMU boundary south of Echo Summit. Efforts to resuscitate FF Hallenbeck were not successful. The Sierra Fire is one of several dozen lightning-caused fires that began on multiple national forests in northern California on Saturday.

CA WILDLAND FF LODD - KILLED BY FALLING TREE 

Monday, August 10, 2015   A wildland firefighter was killed Saturday while helping to battle the so-called Sierra Fire near Lake Tahoe in Northern California, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
An agency statement indicated that the firefighter was struck by a falling tree around 5:30 p.m. in a remote area between the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and the Eldorado National Forest.Cheva Gabor, speaking on behalf of the U.S Forest Service, told NBC Bay Area that the firefighter was in the initial attack phase on Echo Summit when the accident occurred.
The still unidentified firefighter — whose gender is also being withheld until next of kin have been notified — succumbed to the injuries, Gabor said.

Number of Ground Zero responders with 9/11-linked cancers hits 3,700 

Sunday, August 9, 2015   The rising toll of Ground Zero responders and others afflicted with 9/11-linked cancers has hit 3,700.
The staggering tally of those suffering cancers certified by the feds as 9/11-related includes FDNY members (1,100), cops and other Ground Zero responders (2,134), and survivors such as downtown workers and residents (467). Many have more than one type of cancer.
The FDNY’s chief medical officer, Dr. David Prezant, said over 2,100 firefighters and EMS personnel have retired on disability with World Trade Center-related illnesses, mostly lung disease and cancer, since 9/11.
“Due to the physical nature of their jobs, these illnesses have had a tremendous impact on our membership and their families,” he said in a statement.
The grim toll includes 109 FDNY responders who have died from WTC-linked illnesses, 44 of them from cancer.FDNY Deputy Chief Tom Riley will be forced to retire because of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his eye.
