Don't get me wrong. Vertical ventilation is very very useful when done correctly. But, if you come up to a structure and its involved in the void/crawl spaces, the trusses and supports are going to go in no time. I just see vertical ventilation as cooking meat over fire. Vertical ventilation helps prevent Flashover and when done correctly with your attack team, it's awesome! I just don't like being the one on the roof sounding and cutting

Have you never heard of Truckies going to cutting holes in the roof so the ground teams can see, you have never been inside of a burning house, never seen how dark it is, its for the ground teams safety. Its not stupidity its standard procedure.

Then please consider, that we try our best to save lives and property, all fire depts. are different, It is not the station's choice of how much money we get to fund our operations, the city or state decides that, and all depts. vary on how much training that they give their crews, especially if they are a Volunteer Dept, we all have other jobs.

Did you see the fireman fall through the hole he was cutting in the roof. Everyone knows you don't stand in the middle of the hole you are cutting. LOL ahahahahaah. Just shows you what kind of geniuses get hired by FD's.

+Edward Hara Here is your answer. Venting the roof allows the heat and smoke to rise out of the structure to allow an interior fire attack with better conditions to allow the firefighters to work in. Letting the heat out reduces strain and greatly reduces the chances of fatigue from unbearable heat which also allows more time inside the structure to contain the fire. Allowing the smoke to rise out also creates better visibility in a known zero visibility type environment. So by venting the roof first, it greatly helps eliminate those 2 elements before an interior attack is sent.

I must echo Scott Wilson comments. I thought every firefighter knew to never go on the roof of a manufactured home let alone with fire under it. Roof trusses are 2 x 2 or 2X3’s  and often covered with 7/16 OSB. In areas with no snow load it’s not uncommon to have 24 on centers!
Metal Gusset plates are typically used to connect truss system members. A standard gusset-plated truss can fail in less than five to ten minutes of fire exposure.
It's safer to just pull the ceiling.

Everything about this scene is unsafe... first of all, why was the FF cutting the vent on the roof alone at first?... why was he on the roof of manufactured home at all? Secondly, watch the front door... why the hell was the FF in the house alone?! NEVER GO IN ALONE!!! 2 in 2 out!!! And he went in with no back up team on standby?!... I really hope these guys done call themselves professionals

Must see www.smokealarmwarning.org and please sign The C.P.S.C. Petition http://www.cpscpetition.com/ to request manufactures to place warning labels on their faulty ionized detectors. 10's of 1000's of people have lost their lives from smoke inhalation and 100's of 1000's have been injured over last 40 years despite manufactures knowing about this problem and not warning consumers about this defect. Photoelectric alarms are far more reliable and effective but more expensive to make. Their is a big problem with approximately 90% of smoke detectors still in most homes . Despite Ionized detectors which tend to sound siren when cooking or from mist from shower which is a finer smaller particle they do not sound siren in time for safe evacuation during the thicker smoldering stage which is most likely to occur while occupants are asleep. There is mounds of proof (see www.firecrusade.com) the UL and CPSC and manufactures used selective testing so ionized detectors could receive stamp of approval certification and like tobacco companies the makers of ionized detectors have been sued for millions but keep making the deadly devices because they are cheaper to make and they put money before peoples lives.
