Now, $100,000 worth of contaminated equipment is in quarantine -- hoses, tanks, plus fifteen sets of gear. “Our hope is that we can figure out a way to bring this back, but we're not going to do that unless we have absolute guarantee that after we're done cleaning it, it's 100-percent safe to use for our firefighters,” Esbensen said. [ more ]         FIREHOUSE FIRE IN NY Wednesday, July 29, 2015   The cause of a blaze that broke out at the Ionia Fire Department during the early morning hours is unknown as of press time. An automatic alarm at the volunteer station, located on County Road 14, came in at approximately 3 a.m. "When the first members got here, there was quite a bit of smoke in the two bays where the doors come down, which is the original part of the building," said Chief Lynn Parrish, who has served as a chief of the volunteer department on and off for around 35 years. The original bays of the building were built in the 1950s. "It appears that it probably started up in the attic area in the top of the building," Parrish said, pointing out that the volunteer station handles about 60 to 70 fires a year. Volunteers at the department successfully salvaged all the trucks — three trucks are active, one is an antique. The plan is to store the saved trucks at neighboring fire departments until the... [ more ]         LODD MEDICAL: NC FF FOUND DEAD AT FIREHOUSE WSOCTV Video Wednesday, July 29, 2015  The U.S. Fire Administration reported that North Carolina Air National Guard Fire and Emergency Services Captain Hicks, 44, was found unresponsive in his fire department bunkroom several hours after responding to a mutual aid structure fire at 39025 Kemp Road, Albemarle.Captain Hicks was treated by fellow firefighters and other responders but was pronounced deceased at the firehouse. [ more ]         FD 911 DISPATCHER HANGS UP ON CALLER DOING CPR KOB Video Wednesday, July 29, 2015   A dispatch worker for the Albuquerque Fire Department has been removed from the dispatch center and placed on administrative assignment after hanging up on a 911 caller who was trying to get paramedics to the scene in which Jaydon Chavez-Silver was shot and killed.Matthew Sanchez is accused of hanging up on the caller after she became agitated while talking to dispatch. Sanchez hung up on her after she cursed on the phone while talking to him. Crews were called to this double block home on West Front Street in Berwick at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. According to fire officials, the fire started at the home on the left and it is now unlivable. The other side has smoke and water damage, but everyone managed to make it out safely. Fire officials say one firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns. There is no word on his condition. Fire officials believe the fire started upstairs at the home in Columbia County.         FLORIDA APPARATUS CRASH SENDS 8 TO HOSITAL Monday, July 27, 2015  Eight people were injured in a crash involving a Brevard County Fire Rescue truck and a car Friday night, Brevard County officials said. The crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. on Stadium Parkway and Viera Boulevard in Melbourne. Two of the people injured were firefighters, officials said. The firefighters and four other patients were taken to a nearby hospital via ambulance, while the two remaining patients had to be airlifted. Officials said six people were in the car. The fire truck was seen in the middle of an intersection surrounded by other emergency vehicles. The firefighters were on their way back to the station after responding to a call. No other information has been released.          4 FFs BURNED AT CA WILDFIRE Monday, July 27, 2015  Four firefighters suffered burns Sunday and were airlifted from a growing blaze in the Sierra foothills, the first injuries in a tough weekend for fire crews across California. As firefighters wrestled some wildfires under control, other fires closed roads and forced evacuations. The four injured firefighters were battling the Lowell Fire, which erupted Saturday afternoon west of Alta in Nevada County. The wildfire scorched 1,500 acres by Sunday evening and was threatening 1,800 buildings.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, also known as Cal Fire, released few details about the injured firefighters but said they were being evaluated by paramedics. Many nearby residents had already been told to leave the area, with an evacuation center established at Nevada Union High The wildfire’s cause remained unknown. [ more ]         7 NJ FFs TREATED AFTER FIRE Monday, July 27, 2015  Dozens of people were displaced in a fire Sunday involving at least three apartment buildings, authorities confirmed. Fire heavily damaged a building in the 600 block of 10th Street as well as two adjoining buildings on Central Avenue, said Chief Frank Montagne of North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue. Another home on 10th Street was damaged by smoke. Officer Frank Depinto and his partner Jose Ascencio of the Union City Police Department were on patrol around 4:45 p.m. when they encountered a "wall of smoke" on Central Avenue, Depinto said. A neighbor said a column of smoke from the blaze was visible from the New Jersey Turnpike. Depinto and Ascencio helped occupants out of the 10th Street addresses, while arriving firefighters assisted other residents, some of whom were unaware of the fire, Depinto said. [ more ]   TN FIRE CHIEF SUFFERS HEART ATTACK Sunday, July 26, 2015  Gibson County Fire Chief Bryan Cathey is in the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after having a heart attack earlier today, according to the Gibson County Fire Department.Ryan Shanklin, assistant to Cathey, said Cathey is currently doing much better and will spend the night in the intensive care unit. Shanklin said Cathey had the heart attack while responding to a fire in Dyer at 10 a.m. No one was hurt in the fire, he said. "He's doing pretty good," Shanklin said. "He's a fighter."         3 FFs EJECTED, 1 CIVILIAN DEAD IN TX APPARATUS CRASH Sunday, July 26, 2015   Three firefighters were injured Sunday morning in a collision that left an 18-wheeler and an Irving fire truck on their sides.Emergency crews were called to Highway 183 near Beltline Road for an emergency involving a drunk driver. The 18-wheeler slammed into the fire truck, flipping both rigs, according to NBCDFW.com. The firefighters were ejected from their apparatus and the extent of their injuries is unknown. The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene, officials say. Several other vehicles were involved in the crash.         FIREFIGHTERS TREATED FOR SMOKE INHALATION AT LONG ISLAND DWELLING FIRE Sunday, July 26, 2015  Several first responders were treated for smoke inhalation and high blood pressure as firefighters battled hot spots after a fire destroyed a home on Wyandanch Lane in Southampton Village Saturday afternoon.According to Southampton Fire Department 1st Assistant Chief Chris Brenner, the fire was reported at 12:23 p.m. Saturday. Fire Chief Michael Kampf, who was in charge of the scene, was one of the first to respond and arrived while people were still evacuating the home. None of the home’s occupants were injured in the fire, according to authorities. The blaze, Chief Brenner said, is believed to have started in the kitchen before spreading to the rest of the house, which is not habitable. Chief Brenner was not sure how many firefighters were inured, but said several were transported via the Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance and Southampton Ambulance to Southampton Hospital for treatment of both smoke inhalation and elevated blood pressure. more ]         FIREFIGHTER LINE OF DUTY DEATH-NY YANKEES AND BOSTON RED SOX Sunday, July 26, 2015  A FUNDRAISER FOR THE FAMILY OF A NY FIREFIGHTER WHO WAS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AT A DWELLING FIRE-Help Pay Off Their Mortgage! [ more ]   NJ FFs PAY IT FORWARD Sunday, July 26, 2015  One act of kindness led to another in New Jersey when a waitress' decision to pay for some firefighters' breakfast prompted strangers to help her. Two firefighters stopped in a diner after an overnight shift containing a warehouse fire earlier this week and had breakfast at the Route 130 Diner in Delran, according to ABC News affiliate WPVI. A waitress, Liz Woodward, overheard the firefighters, Tim Young and and Paul Higgins, talking about the fire. That's when she decided to pay them back for their efforts, according to WPVI. She wrote a note on the back of the check -- complete with drawn fireman's helmet and ax. Young then shared a photo of the check, along with a call for his friends to visit the diner, and to "tip big" if they ever had Woodward as a waitress. He didn't stop there. He wrote another post highlighting a GoFundMe campaign that Woodward had started in December to pay for a wheelchair accessible van for her father. ...
