4 FDNY FFs INJURED AT STATEN ISLAND MOTEL FIRE

Wednesday, July 22, 2015   A civilian and four firefighters suffered minor injuries in a fire that burned through the Midland Motor Inn early Wednesday morning.About 33 units and 138 firefighters and EMS responded to the blaze that was called at 1:07 a.m. for the 3-story hotel at 630 Midland Ave. The fire was brought under control at 3:05 a.m., according to a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS.

EMS treated a civilian at the scene who declined further medical attention, but four firefighters were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, the spokesman said.

An employee who declined to give his name said that the fire started in a second floor room occupied by two women. He speculated that a lit cigarette was the cause.

The employee said he grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put out the blaze himself, but that the flames spread too fast. He pulled a fire alarm and then ran through the building knocking on doors to make sure that everybody was evacuating.

Several Problems Identified in Houston Fire Tragedy

Wednesday, July 22, 2015   HOUSTON (Houston Chronicle) - A federal analysis of a May 2013 fire at the Southwest Inn that killed four Houston firefighters is in "alignment" with earlier local and state reports that cited communication failures and tactics used at the scene of the blaze, Houston Fire Department officials said Monday. The recently released report, from the CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, is intended "to educate not just the Houston Fire Department, but the entire American fire service," HFD officials said in a statement.

The federal investigators noted several factors that contributed to the fire and subsequent loss of life. The fire smoldered for three hours before it was reported to the Houston Fire Department. The construction of the building, heavy winds, personnel accountability, communication problems and a lack of an adequate fire sprinkler system also played a part.

Local 48 Union President Matt Alter said firefighters are certainly on higher alert after a number of attacks of first responders across the country.

"The firefighters understandably are pretty shaken up," said Alter.

Danger is inherently part of a firefighter's job, but Alter said the threat to his crew while they were putting out the blaze on Sunday at a vacant Avondale home was both unexpected and unacceptable.

"To target the firefighter is about as cowardly as it gets," Alter said.

He said firefighters on scene heard four to six shots.

CA FF RECOVERING FROM SEVERE BURNS AT WILDFIRE

Monday, July 20, 2015   Corona firefighter Roger Williams was extinguishing hot spots in a residential area scorched by the North Fire when the ground gave way and his leg slipped into a smoking pile of embers Saturday afternoon.
“I took a step and next thing I know I’m thigh-deep in this ash pit,” Williams said Sunday from his hospital bed. “I knew right away things weren’t going to go well.”
The Corona fire captain was wearing two layers of fire-resistant pants and immediately removed his leg, but the coals and super-heated air slipped into his pant leg and seared much of the skin between his ankle and hip.
The accident caused second-degree burns to 15 percent of his body.“It’s just one of those fluke things,” explained Capt. Jim Steiner, a long-time friend and coworker. “You can be walking all over and suddenly the ground just gives way. It could be a burned out stump or any number of things. You never know.”
An ambulance took Williams to Arrowhead Regional Medical Cent... [ more ]

Extreme Firefighter Close Call-Video

FF Down Video
Monday, July 20, 2015   This video is of an incident that happened about a year ago-but is excellent for all of our training. You'll see a relatively small dwelling with an obvious working fire in the rear. As companies were setting up, they found a stripped hydrant, the IC strikes the second right away, crews find a second source, companies go to work etc.

The IC assigned a Captain to handle fire attack and the Captain did as ordered. As he approached the dwelling, San Bernadino Fire Captain Greg Gallagher was struck in the helmet by a powerline line but thankfully did not suffer any injury.

Take a look-another excellent training opportunity that we can all learn from.
