CA FF RECOVERING FROM SEVERE BURNS AT WILDFIRE

Monday, July 20, 2015   Corona firefighter Roger Williams was extinguishing hot spots in a residential area scorched by the North Fire when the ground gave way and his leg slipped into a smoking pile of embers Saturday afternoon.
“I took a step and next thing I know I’m thigh-deep in this ash pit,” Williams said Sunday from his hospital bed. “I knew right away things weren’t going to go well.”
The Corona fire captain was wearing two layers of fire-resistant pants and immediately removed his leg, but the coals and super-heated air slipped into his pant leg and seared much of the skin between his ankle and hip.
The accident caused second-degree burns to 15 percent of his body.“It’s just one of those fluke things,” explained Capt. Jim Steiner, a long-time friend and coworker. “You can be walking all over and suddenly the ground just gives way. It could be a burned out stump or any number of things. You never know.”
An ambulance took Williams to Arrowhead Regional Medical Cent... [ more ]

BODY CAMERA OF SD FF BEING STABBED/ATTACKED

NBC San Diego
Monday, July 20, 2015   Jarring video showing a man stabbing two San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) firefighters was shown in a courtroom Friday during a preliminary hearing for the accused attacker. The short, 10-second clip – captured on a body camera worn by a security guard for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) – shows the chaotic moments when suspect Ryan Allen Jones, 34, lunged at firefighters Benjamin Vernon, 37, and his partner, Alex Wallbrett, 32, on June 24 in East Village in downtown San Diego.

Several other firefighters and security guards can be seen rushing to the aid of the wounded firefighters while a guard yells out, “Cover now! Cover now! Cover now!”
The violent encounter with Jones happened while Vernon and Wallbrett were on duty responding to a medical call at a public transit station in East Village.

When officials arrived at the transit stop, Jones allegedly tried to interfere as they worked. After officials pushed Jones away, he beca... [ more ]

Extreme Firefighter Close Call-Video

FF Down Video
Monday, July 20, 2015   This video is of an incident that happened about a year ago-but is excellent for all of our training. You'll see a relatively small dwelling with an obvious working fire in the rear. As companies were setting up, they found a stripped hydrant, the IC strikes the second right away, crews find a second source, companies go to work etc.

The IC assigned a Captain to handle fire attack and the Captain did as ordered. As he approached the dwelling, San Bernadino Fire Captain Greg Gallagher was struck in the helmet by a powerline line but thankfully did not suffer any injury.

Take a look-another excellent training opportunity that we can all learn from.

STRAY BULLET STRIKES FIREFIGHTERS HELMET AT WORKING FIRE SCENE

Sunday, July 19, 2015   Sunday is a reflective day at the District 3 firehouse in Cincinnati, hours after a firefighter was hit by a bullet in the helmet while battling a fire in Avondale.
CFD Captain McWilliams acknowledged that shootings are always in the back of firefighters' minds as they do their job.
"There are so many shootings going on," McWilliams said. "That thought is there. That possibility is always there. The areas that we work -- there's a lot of that going on."
McWilliams said firefighters usually do feel safe doing their job. Whenever there is an incident, police officers go into the building first.
That was not the case around midnight, when 55 firefighters responded to a structure fire in a vacant two-story building in the 500 block of Carplin Place. Shortly after their arrival, gunfire broke out in the area, grazing one firefighter's helmet and "narrowly missing several others," according to the fire department.
About four or five shots were heard at... [ more ]

DRONES GROUND WILDFIRE AIRCRAFT AGAIN IN CA

Sunday, July 19, 2015   Of all the elements they must battle in a wildfire, firefighters face a new foe: drones operated by enthusiasts who presumably take close-up video of the disaster.Five such “unmanned aircraft systems” prevented California firefighters from dispatching helicopters with water buckets for up to 20 minutes over a wildfire that roared Friday onto a Los Angeles area freeway that leads to Las Vegas.

Helicopters couldn’t drop water because five drones hovered over the blaze, creating hazards in smoky winds for a deadly midair disaster, officials said.

The North Fire torched 20 vehicles on Interstate 15 and incited panic among motorists who fled on foot on the freeway Friday. The wildfire continued to burn uncontrollably Saturday, scorching 3,500 acres with only 5% containment in San Bernardino County, officials said.

Drones hovering over wildfires is a new trend in California, and on Saturday, fire officials condemned the operators of “hobby drones,... [ more ]

CLOSE CALL IN IOWA - SEMI FIRE FULL OF PROPANE TANKS!

Wednesday, July 15, 2015   A semi trailer and its load of filled propane tanks was destroyed in a fire on Monday, July 13, 2015 near Carmel.

According to Rock Valley Fire Chief John Wallenburg, about 6:00 PM, the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of semi fire about a half mile east of Eagle Avenue on B30, or about three and a half miles west of Carmel. The chief says the fire department saw the fire from a long way away as they approached the scene. They found a semi with a trailer full of filled 20 and 40-pound propane tanks, similar to the ones used for grills and forklifts. He says by the time they got there, some of the over 200 tanks were already exploding. Wallenburg says the 40-pound aluminum tanks were the most dangerous, as they tended to shatter, sending shrapnel several feet away at high speed. The smaller 20-pound steel tanks either released their gas from the release valve or exploded by blowing the top off the tank.

He says they used lots of water to fight the... [ more ]

FIRST DUE COMPANY & CHIEF FIRE OFFICER TRAINING CONFERENCE - FEELING BLUE?

Wednesday, July 15, 2015   We wanted to "pass this on" as it's a unique conference opportunity for those of you who may transmit the words "in command" or "establishing command" --- I am not going to waste your time. Trust me-this is worth checking out. There have been more than a few stories out there in the media lately regarding the responsibility and issues related to the FIRE OFFICERS and FIRE COMMANDER at a fire.

Being in "command" is far more than just saying it-you now own it-and there are unfortunately few training programs that really focus on the role and huge responsibility of the FIRST ARRIVING company officer-and the FIRST ARRIVING chief officer.

And while few like talking about it, the FACT is that FEW fire officers (chiefs or company) are provided with realistic hands on type training for their vital role of being the INITIAL ARRIVING (and 2nd arriving "assuming") fire incident commander. This unique conference will arm you the information and traini... [ more ]
