Because EMS happens 24/7 it is critical to study sleep health and fatigue in EMS. Recently a Texas medic at the end of a 48-hour shift fell asleep at the wheel and crashed the ambulance. Concern for patient and provider safety was the impetus for a S.C. EMS agency to change from 24-hour to 12-hour shifts. Indianapolis EMS has also changed all of its units to 12-hour shifts.
