American veterans of Iraq war join Kurds battling ISIL
Soldiers with combat experience from US occupation say reports of ISIL atrocities have brought them back - on their own.
| War & Conflict, Middle East, US, Kurds, ISIL
Veterans of the US occupation of Iraq have been joining Kurdish units fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in northern Iraq.
Al Jazeera spoke to a number of the men, who had crossed into Iraq a few months ago, and had since taken part in clashes against ISIL fighters, alongside Kurdish Peshmerga troops.
One former member of the US Marine Corps, who went by the name Kurt, said the volunteers have been moved to take part in the conflict by reports of atrocities ISIL had committed since they seized large parts of Iraq a year ago.
One Minute ISIL
|
"I just thought it was the right thing to do. ... I saw a lot of the atrocities happening via the news, the beheading and the slave trade," he said.
Kurt explained that he and other former US soldiers had been smuggled across Turkey's border by a group called Frame, which had since disbanded.
Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr, reporting from southern Kirkuk, said the men brought military experience with them but were short on the equipment needed to fend off ISIL fighters.
"The arms they carry are good for urban warfare, not for a battlefield like this, where there's open terrain," she said.
Another volunteer she spoke to said his weapons could not hit targets beyond 200m.
The fighters have been welcomed by Kurdish authorities and factions, which have made use of Western volunteers in both Iraq and Syria.
However, the Iraqi government in Baghdad has rejected their presence.
The US military has reinforced Kurdish and Iraqi government campaigns to retake territory held by ISIL through an aerial campaign, and by sending non-combat military advisers.
Despite the presence of Western air power, ISIL has continued to make gains, most recently taking Anbar's provincial capital, Ramadi, after more than a year of clashes in the city.
The Pentagon has ruled out sending combat troops to fight ISIL.

this just came in today... it is a film about muslims in pakistan but it expalines the muslim herritage and culture
Pakistan’s Hidden Shame,” a new documentary produced almost entirely by a Pakistani team, exposes the pervasive problem of child molestation and prostitution of under-age boys on the country’s streets. While it has already made waves in Japan and Australia, and this week premièred in the UK, it has yet to be broadcast in Pakistan itself.
The 47-minute documentary depicts an unending cycle of stolen childhood, drug addiction and poverty. The scale of the problem is brought to light through a series of shocking confessions and accounts by both victims and perpetrators of child abuse. Bus conductor Ejaz confesses to ra/////ping on buses “about 11 or 12 kids” aged between eight and 10.

This is called the re-invasion of Iraq. Now, the US officially supports all of the parties in conflict; they arm the Sunni, the Shia, and ISIS. The Saudis and the Israelis are doing the same thing behind the curtains but we all know about it.

The US in its infinite idiocy started this mess by overthrowing Saddam on false premises, invaded Iraq with 50 other puppet nations, upset the regional balance, did not have the stomach and guts to fight a determined insurgency (many of ISIS are Saddam's Sunni officers) and cut a run, leaving Iraq in a chaos. Then many opportunists like Maliki took over and did not create an inclusive government and US desperate to cut and run, poured money, weapons and dubious quality training into the most Shia and tribal new "Iraqi Army". The Sunnis bolstered by the tribes, Saddam's army and thousands of foreign Jihadis pouring in and took up arms and easily routed the US trained Iraqi army and now we are back to square one. Even if US puts ground troops, the Iraqis will unite again and kill Americans or any western force. Moral of the story is leave the Arabs alone and don't get involved in tribal wars and overseas invasions where you don's belong or have the guts to see it through. Same lesson for Ukraine. Russians will kick the US out of there too as it is their turf. America is nation of redneck racist fools in the twilight zone of history.

Two rednecks won't make much of difference when over 250,000 US losers cut and run from Iraq and the 8000 there now can't do much. This is a local fight against US created terrorists and will be won by the Arabs. Demographically only the Shia's with a coalition of Kurds, Christians, Yezidis and minorities have the number as Dr. Juan Cole wrote in the Washington Post op ed recently. US trained soldiers are only primed for defeat as wars are not a Hollywood movie.

Arming and "training" the Iraqi army worked out so well eh?????????????
Dude, where’s my Humvee? Iraq losing equipment to Islamic State at staggering rate of over $25 BILLION
Iraqi security forces so-hyped up by "US training" lost 2,300 Humvee armored vehicles when Islamic State overran the northern city of Mosul in June 2014, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Sunday in an interview with Iraqiya state television. Coupled with previous losses of American weapons, the conclusion is simple: The United States is effectively supplying Islamic State with tools of war the militant group cannot otherwise hope to acquire from its patrons.
In addition to the Humvees, Iraqi forces previously abandoned significant types and numbers of heavy weapons to Islamic State. For example, losses to Islamic State include at least 40 M1A1 main battle tanks, as well as small arms and ammunition, including 74,000 machine guns, and as many as 52 M198 howitzer mobile gun systems.
“We lost a lot of weapons,” Abadi admitted.
To help replenish Iraq’s motor pool, the U.S. State Department last year approved a sale to Iraq of 1,000 Humvees, along with their armor upgrades, machine guns and grenade launchers. The United States previously donated 250 Mine Resistant Armored Personnel carriers (MRAPs) to Iraq, plus unaccountable amounts of material left behind when American forces departed in 2011. The United States is currently in the process of moving to Iraq 175 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks, 55,000 rounds of main tank-gun ammunition, $600 million in howitzers and trucks, $700 million worth of Hellfire missiles and 2,000 AT-4 rockets.
The United States also continues to spend money on training the Iraqi military. Some 3,000 American soldiers are currently in Iraq preparing Iraqi soldiers to perhaps someday fight Islamic State; many of the Americans are conducting the training on former military bases abandoned by the United States following Gulf War 2.0. In addition, some $1.2 billionin training funds for Iraq were tucked into an omnibus spending bill that Congress passed earlier this year. This is in spite of the sad reality that from 2003 to 2011, the United States spent $25 billion training Iraqi security forces.
The return on these training investments? The Iraqi army had 30,000 soldiers in Mosul, who ran away in the face of about 1,000 Islamic State fighters. The same thing happened just a few weeks ago in Ramadi, where 10,000 Iraqi soldiers, collapsing faster than a cardboard box in the rain, fled ahead of only 400 Islamic State fighters. The Iraqis left behind more weapons.
In an interview with me a year ago, Chris Coyne, professor of economics at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, predicted this exact scenario well before the United States sent troops back into Iraq:
“The United States government provided significant amounts of military hardware to the Iraqi government with the intention that it would be used for good. However, during the Islamic State offensive, many of the Iraqis turned and ran, leaving behind the United States-supplied hardware. This weapons windfall may further alter the dynamics in Syria. US trained and armed armies has not fared well historically.

The US and its stooges pumped over $40 billions in weapons and training to the "new" Iraqi army which fared even worse than Saddam's first million man army, that at least did hand over all its weapons to the enemies and then regrouped and fought a successful guerrilla war to defeat the Americans.
The impact of all these heavy weapons falling into Islamic State hands is significant for American foreign policy goals in the Middle East. A report prepared for the United Nations Security Council warns that Islamic State possesses sufficient reserves of small arms, ammunition and vehicles to wage its war in Syria and Iraq for two to five more years.
And that presumes the United States and is "trained armies" won’t be losing more tools of war to Islamic State, thanks to US training and poor military building blocks. US has history of training corrupt and ineffective armies from Korea, Vietnam, Pakistan, Somalia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and so on...........

Who are you to tell these veterans or any american that they are wrong for heading to syria and iraq to help the kurds fight ISIS? If they choose to do so then I applaud them for their courage, the kurds need any help they can get. These are combat veterans who have already been through horrors of the war in iraq, war and combat is deeply ingrained in their heads and I don't blame them for seeing what ISIS is doing over there and feeling the need to go back.

They'll make great hostages, that's for sure. All those rednecks start waving little flags and screaming for other people to go to Iraq, while they sink a few beers and watch the fun on CNN.
Im sure Al Qaeda in Iraq - now known as ISIL - will be delighted with such a gift.
Here's the thing - Al Qaeda in Iraq aren't killing foreigners and Christians this time, they're killing Iraqi's and Muslims.
Many Muslims are turning against them.

Yes they have lots of fighters but not muchl in the way of weapons munitions and artillery and ISIS has gained much in the way of the same when the Iraqi army left their posts and surrendered their weapons to them and ISIS are turning many of the Humvees they aquired into armoured suicide bombs.

Any decent man or women should have the choice to avoid nudity . I love women but believe they're degrading themselves , by putting their private parts on display .The white men , promoted nudity for women in their culture , probably for cheap thrills.
Not so long ago, western women were covered from head to toe . It's impossible to save young children from being exposed to nudity, from tv ad's ,internet to street posters.
I'm sure even you'd feel uncomfortable ,if your mother, sister ,daughter were walking around your house wearing flimsy clothing.
Covering up is excellent for men, women and society. No where in the Koran , dose it say that, women should put their beauty on show.
Question for you ,why dose the whit race support and encourage homosexuality, g'ay marriage and g@ys adopting children ? These children will automatically turn g@y because they'll believe it's normal , when we both know it's sick , perversion.

there are many reason why this may be an attractive idea for some former veterans,
also, and it goes for other current situations all the same, there has been a longstanding tradition to embrace foreigners that fought in wars of emancipation and independence. so hey get a sense of belonging.
thus where they got the reasons (ptsd) and the motivation (the drill: we are only good, they are only bad and stupid) as well as the feeling of guilt, (I finally get t do something usefull I was taught with all the killing and murder I was taught)
plus that the usual state rather rids them than pays for their healthcare bills...
sensible reasons plenty.

They don`t want to lose any troops or engage in a never ending conflict that will cost them a fortune. What are they doing, apart from allowing the coalition to use it`s military bases they`re doing nothing. But at least they are now vetting people who are landing at their airports and if considered to be a risk of joining the conflict are deporting them to whence they came and apart from deporting suspected Jihadi`s have deported many young muslim girls back to the eu and uk especially
