SD LODD FF WAS DRUNK AT TIME OF FIRE

Friday, June 5, 2015   The volunteer firefighter who died in a Brandon fire in April had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit to drive, authorities said Friday.Valley Springs volunteer firefighter Steve Ackerman, 38, had a blood alcohol level of 0.189, according to a toxicology test. The April 12 fire also killed homeowner David Smith, 47.

Both men died of smoke inhalation in the fire that was determined to be accidental.

"Whether this contributed to the circumstances of his death is clearly open to speculation," Brandon Police Chief David Kull said. "Though his judgment to respond to this fire in the first was place was arguably flawed, we have to remember Steve was the one who made the correct call to evacuate the structure, and that the two firefighters that were on the entry team with him inside the burning home were able to exit uninjured."

The Valley Springs Fire Department was among the first responders to the house fire in Brandon at about 10 p.m. ... [ more ]

TAKING FIRE PREVENTION SERIOUSLY? FIRE OFFICERS CONVICTED IN FIRE THAT LEFT 242 DEAD

Thursday, June 4, 2015   Two firefighters from the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sur were convicted Wednesday in connection with a January 2013 nightclub fire that killed 242 people.
A retired colonel who commanded the fire department in the town of Santa Maria at the time and a captain were each sentenced to one year in jail by a military court for having granted the local Kiss nightclub a permit to operate, though it lacked the necessary fire prevention system.
Six other firefighters were acquitted, though the eight defendants still face trial in a civilian court, along with the nightclub's two owners and two members of the band Gurizada Fandangueira, which was performing at the club.
The fire struck with the nightclub packed with university students.
Investigators allege that a member of the band caused the fire when he lit a flare that set sound-proof foam on the ceiling ablaze, while factors including faulty fire extinguishers and a lack of fire escapes contributed t... [ more ]

FOOD ON THE STOVE IS THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE THAT KILLED A CINCINNATI FIREFIGHTER IN THE LINE OF DUTY

RIP
RIP
Wednesday, June 3, 2015   Food left unattended on a stove caused the fire in the building where Cincinnati Firefighter Daryl Gordon died in the Line of Duty in March.
Fire Apparatus Operator Gordon was searching Kings Towers Apartment in Madisonville for people trapped by the fire when he fell down an open elevator shaft and became wedged between an elevator car and the wall.
The Cincinnati Fire Department's Fire Investigation Unit classified the cause of the March 26 fire as accidental.
The fire originated atop a General Electric stove, the report states. Multiple materials including food caught fire after a 54-year-old resident operating the stove fell asleep.
A mandatory investigation was triggered by virtue of a third alarm being declared in the blaze at 6018 Dahlgren St.
Gordon's death was the first line-of-duty fatality involving a Greater Cincinnati firefighter in almost seven years.
The total estimated damage from the fire is $250,000, according to the report.

FIREFIGHTERS CLEARLY AT RISK FOR CANCER-BUT AN EVEN HIGHER RISK FOR BLACK AND LATINO FIREFIGHTERS

Wednesday, June 3, 2015    A new study has found that firefighters have a greater than average risk of developing some types of cancer, and that black and Latino firefighters face the highest risk of all. The reason may be based upon the areas they work-and the fire activity by run volume.
The findings by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the federal agency that researches work-related hazards, confirm previous research about firefighters and cancers that may be caused by inhalation of toxic fumes. But the study is unique for its size and focus on minority firefighters. Authors say it included more firefighters with cancer–3,996–than previous studies.

The study, published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, used 1988 to 2007 data from the California Cancer Registry to compare the incidence of cancer among firefighters and the general public. It found that all California firefighters had a 30 to 100 percent greater chance of developing melan... [ more ]

FIREFIGHTER IN THE "BEST" PLACE FOR THE "WORST" TO HAPPEN

Wednesday, June 3, 2015    David Knapke may have been in the best place for one of the worst things to happen.
Knapke, a lieutenant with the Williamsburg Township (Ohio) Fire Department, collapsed Saturday night just after he and firefighters from Williamsburg and Mt. Orab finished putting out a fire on Greenbush West Road.

"He either cried out, 'Help' or 'Hey,' and nobody was really clear who he was yelling at, and then he just fell over," said Capt. Daniel Bainum, with Williamsburg Township Emergency Services.
For nearly 20 minutes, Knapke's heart stopped beating; it had to be shocked five times to get started again. Bainum said Knapke was lucky to be surrounded by emergency personnel who knew exactly what to do.
"All kinds of scenarios play in that game, but because he was with us, there's no doubt that improved his odds greatly," Bainum said.
Knapke, 55, was flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Doctors are hopeful he'll wake up in the next day or so, at wh... [ more ]
