WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER COMES UP WITH AN IDEA TO SAVE FIREFIGHTER LIVES 

Sunday, June 28, 2015    It is simple, inexpensive, easy to make, and could possibly save the lives of bush firefighters across Australia and maybe the world!
The Burn Over Protection Unit is the brainchild of inventor and volunteer bush firefighter Chris Probert, who lives in the small town of Denmark in Western Australia's south coast.
Folded into a cabinet on top of the water tanks at the rear of a fire pump truck, the hi-tech heat resistant "tent" drops down over three people in a matter of seconds, providing a temporary protective refuge while a fire front passes.
It takes seconds for the fabric shield to deploy without need for motors, electricity or hydraulics to operate it.
The 67-year-old, who retired to Denmark after a life of designing and manufacturing as a mechanical engineer, became involved in his local Ocean Beach volunteer bush fire brigade four years ago.

FF FALLS FROM HELICOPTER IN BRAZIL 

Sunday, June 28, 2015   A sergeant firefighter fell from a helicopter on Friday in the State of Ceará, in the Northeast of Brazil. He broke both legs and a rib and suffered injuries in his arms, but no life-threatening injury. According to the media, he was rappelling from the helicopter during a law enforcement operation, when he lost control of the descend speed.   
     

 

AMBULANCE ROLLOVER IN SC 

Sunday, June 28, 2015   Myrtle Beach police officers are investigating after a wreck involving an HCFR ambulance.The ambulance driver was heading south on U.S. 17 Bypass to Grand Strand Regional Hospital just before 11 a.m. Saturday with its lights on, according to Traffic Sergeant Jim Allen with Myrtle Beach Police.

The ambulance was taking a cardiac patient to the hospital at the time, according to Brian VanAernem with HCFR.

Sgt. Allen said a vehicle heading east on Grand Dunes Boulevard had a green light and t-boned the ambulance.

An investigation is ongoing to determine who is at fault in the wreck.

The patient in the ambulance, a medic and the ambulance driver were taken to the hospital are expected to be okay.

No one was hurt in the other car.

Traffic is moving normally on U.S. 17 Bypass.
     

 

UPDATE: SAN DIEGO FFs CONTINUE TO RECOVER 

Saturday, June 27, 2015   Two firefighters who were jumped and stabbed by a physically imposing assailant during a medical-aid call at an East Village transit depot were recovering Thursday from their “near-death experience,” according to their boss.
“I’m very, very pleased to be here today to announce that those firefighters are going to be OK,” San Diego Fire Chief Javier Mainar said during a briefing at downtown police headquarters.Ben Vernon, 32, and Alex Wallbertt, 37, were tending to an ill man at the trolley station in the 500 block of Park Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday when a bystander, 34-year-old Ryan Allen Jones, allegedly began crowding them and telling them what to do, even though he apparently was not acquainted with the patient.

“He was asked several times by the firefighters to move back,” San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters. “He continued to interfere with the firefighters rendering the aid, and an altercation occurred.”

FF INJURED AT CA GRASS FIRE 

Saturday, June 27, 2015   A firefighter was injured and three structures were damaged as a fast-moving fire scorched grasslands in eastern Alameda County Thursday evening, officials said.
The first reports of the blaze came in just after 4 p.m. on Tesla Road near Clifford Drive southeast of Livermore, said Aisha Knowles, a spokeswoman for the Alameda County Fire Department, which was battling the fire in cooperation with Cal Fire and municipal fire departments from Livermore, Pleasanton and Fremont.
The fire quickly spread to around 50 acres, but by 6 p.m. Cal Fire officials said that the blaze was contained. A firefighter was hurt, though the nature and extent of the injuries was not immediately clear.A barn, a vehicle and a shipping container were destroyed and a home was damaged in the blaze, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said.
Roads in the area were closed and California Highway Patrol officers were managing traffic near the scene and crews remained on the scene to mop up hotspots, officials said.

OR FF INJURED BY FALLING SHEETROCK AT FIRE 

Thursday, June 25, 2015   A Clackamas firefighter was listed in stable condition Tuesday night after they were hit by falling sheetrock.The fire at 16321 Oak Valley Drive in Oregon City was reported just before 3 p.m.

It was placed under control in 45 minutes, according to Brandon Paxton, public information officer for Clackamas Fire District No. 1.

While conducting overhaul, a large section of sheettrock fell about 15 feet from the ceiling and landed on his head.

He was transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital for evaluation and treatment, where he was listed in stable condition
     

 

2 MIAMI DADE FFs INJURED AT HOUSE FIRE

Thursday, June 25, 2015   Two firefighters were injured while trying to put out a blaze inside a Kendall home Wednesday evening.
Miami-Dade Fire officials said the two suffered minor injuries.
“Two firefighters were transported to the hospital, one suffered minor burns. The other one suffered smoke inhalation,” said Arnold Piedrahita with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Crews were called to the scene around 5:30 p.m. at a home located at 8945 SW 100 Street.
Chopper4 was over the scene when crews faced a challenge after the roof of the home collapsed. A firefighter was seen being carried by his or her colleagues then sitting down on the ground and getting checked.
“The flames were really scary,” said neighbor Judy Muniz.
While crews fought off the blaze, two elderly people were in the home at the time of the blaze along with their dogs.
The couple’s next-door neighbor who ran over to help says the couple made it out of the home on their own before firefighters arrived.

UPDATE: SAN DIEGO FFs RECOVERING FROM STABBING 

Thursday, June 25, 2015   Two firefighters were injured in an apparent stabbing attack Wednesday afternoon during a medical-aid call in the East Village.A man pulled a knife or similar weapon and assaulted the emergency personnel shortly before 4 p.m. as they were trying to treat him for some sort of ailment in the 600 block of Park Boulevard, according to the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department.

An ambulance crew was called to the scene for the firefighters. It was unclear how seriously they were hurt.

Police had a suspect in custody within 15 minutes of the altercation, SDPD Officer Humberto Hernandez said. The arrestee’s name was not immediately available.

Officers are responding to reports that two firefighters have suffered injuries of unknown severity in a knife assault in the 600 block of Park Boulevard in the East Village, a San Diego police spokesman says. A possible suspect has been taken into custody, he says.
     

 

2 FFs INJURED AT KANSAS DOLLAR GENERAL FIRE 

Thursday, June 25, 2015   Fire investigators are looking for three juveniles who may have started the fire that heavily damaged the Dollar General on Pawnee near Meridian on Tuesday afternoon.

The fire caused an estimated $400,000 in damage and sent two firefighters to the hospital, Fire Marshal Brad Crisp said. One was treated for dehydration and the other for injuries sustained when debris fell on him while fighting the blaze at 2427 W. Pawnee.

“There was quite a bit of debris that was falling down,” Crisp said. “Visibility was very poor.”

Both firefighters have been released after treatment. More than 70 firefighters were sent to the fire, which was reported just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Employees at Sonic just east of the Dollar General noticed the fire near the front door and alerted people inside, Crisp said.

“We are going after some leads,” he said.

MOTORCYCLE/APPARATUS CRASH IN LA COUNTY - GO PRO VIDEO

Thursday, June 25, 2015   GoPro video shows 24-year-old Jesse Lopez racing up Glendora Ridge Road on April 1 with another biker, when he came to a blind curve and crashed into the firetruck. His GoPro camera went flying off his helmet and captured him laying on the ground as it flew in the air.
Lopez’s friend picked up the camera, nervously pacing as crew members rushed to help Lopez, who suffered two compound fractures in his left leg and a severely broken arm. He was later airlifted to a trauma center. He wants to share the video in hopes of saving other riders from his life-changing lesson.
     

 

PITTSBURGH ENGINE HITS BRIDGE ABUTMANT 

Wednesday, June 24, 2015   Two Pittsburgh firefighters were taken to a hospital Tuesday after their fire truck smashed into a support for the Brady Street bridge, reports triblive.com.
The crash happened about 9 a.m. when a South Side Slopes fire crew was returning from a call for a disabled vehicle, Pittsburgh public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.
The truck was heading northeast on Bates Street from Second Avenue when it crashed into the bridge support, Toler said.
Two of the four firefighters in the truck were taken to a hospital. Their injuries were minor, Toler said.
Neither the bridge nor its support beam were damaged, but the fire truck was "significantly damaged," Toler said.
     

 

FF BITTEN BY BEAR IN ALASKA 

Wednesday, June 24, 2015   A firefighter battling a blaze in the Chugach National Forest is being treated for minor injuries after a run-in with a bear Monday night, fire officials said Tuesday.The man was bitten by the bear as he fought the Juneau Lake Fire, according to a statement posted on the Alaska Wildland Fire Information blog. The 573-acre lightning-caused fire, which started June 16, is about 35 percent contained; an online fire report Monday night lists “the remote access for incoming crews” as a key challenge in fighting it.

“Due to the remote location of the encounter, the most direct transport was a LifeMed helicopter which airlifted the firefighter from the Juneau Lake site to a hospital in Anchorage,” fire officials wrote in a statement on the incident. “The firefighter walked from the encounter site to the helicopter and is undergoing standard treatment for animal bites.”

FIREFIGHTER DOWN IN NJ-CPR 

Wednesday, June 24, 2015   This afternoon in New Jersey, a Firefighter went down and suffered cardiac arrest while operating at a fire. The Medford Township Firefighter is recovering now, after he was hospitalized while fighting that house fire in Tabernacle.
The  Firefighter suffered cardiac arrest and was transported to Deboarah Heart and Lung Hospital, where he remains hospitalized.
According to Union Fire Company #1's Facebook page, the Firefighter had responded to the scene on Sooy Place Road in the township this morning after spending hours responding to multiple calls related to the severe thunderstorms that battered South Jersey on Tuesday night.  KTIYP's

FIREFIGHTERS STABBED ON AN EMS RUN IN SAN DIEGO 

Wednesday, June 24, 2015   Two firefighters responding to a medical call in the East Village section of San Diego (California) were stabbed this  afternoon, and the person suspected of attacking them was taken into custody. Cops say the incident happened at about 4:10 p.m. in the 600 block of Park Boulevard but what led to the stabbing and the extent of the firefighters' injuries is unknown.
