Lawrence, Every day, 1.2 million passengers ride in NYC's taxis and for-hire vehicles. But 62% don’t buckle their seatbelts - even though many would in a private car. Why? Bizarrely, New York State exempts cabs from the state’s seatbelt law. The result? Any ER doctor can tell you - severe facial fractures, traumatic brain injuries, acute neck and spinal injuries, “partition face,†and, yes, tragically preventable deaths. Take Action: Urge the New York State Legislature to close the Taxi Seatbelt Loophole! In the last few months, you may have seen us weighing in on the deaths of veteran CBS reporter Bob Simon, “Beautiful Mind†genius John Nash Jr., and his wife. When these extraordinary people died they were riding in for-hire vehicles but not wearing seatbelts. Act Now – the legislature has only one week to go before they leave for vacation.Simply put, New York’s current taxi seatbelt loophole is deceiving, dangerous, and too often deadly. It contributes to a false sense of safety and results in far too many preventable injuries and deaths. Please join us today – urge your legislators to require seatbelt use in cabs! Thanks, Michael O’Loughlin Campaign Director Cab Riders United
