TOKYO – Emergency response units from the Tokyo Fire Department Azabu District conducted an evacuation and emergency response drill held at the U.S. joint services hotel New Sanno in Tokyo, Nov. 21.

The drill was conducted to evaluate the units’ abilities to fully evacuate service members and their families in the event of an emergency situation, as well as provide aid to victims quickly and efficiently in the American-style hotel.

“This drill allows us to train in the American environment. In the New Sanno hotel there are both Japanese and American standard emergency equipment,” said Toshiko Hasegawa, Azabu Fire Station’s director of safety education. “During this training, we can familiarize ourselves with this unique territory.”

Drills like this and the recent joint U.S.-Japan helicopter casualty drill held at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Nov.5, also help to solidify the U.S. and Japan’s faith in each other’s ability to assist in times of need. This confidence plays a large part in strengthening andfirming the bonds between U.S. citizens and their Japanese counterparts.

Azabu Fire District Chief Chiaki Ishii expressed his enthusiasm to be working alongside Commander Naval Region Japan Fire and Emergency Services and the staff of the New Sanno. He spoke of the interoperability that the U.S. and Japan had displayed during ‘Operation Tomodachi’, the joint relief effort following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

“We are very pleased to be able to have this opportunity,” said Azabu Fire District Chief Chiaki Ishii. “America gave us a great gift during Operation Tomodachi, their support has saved countless numbers of lives. We look forward to being able to show our support as well.”

The drill is an annual event held at the hotel to fortify response ability, which is especially important for the holiday season. The New Sanno hotel is located in the heart of Tokyo and is a popular destination for service members who would like to spend their holidays in the city.

“During peak demand times such as holidays and summer, the New Sanno often is tentatively booked several months in advance,” said Bill Liedholm, director of the New Sanno. “However, it is normal for us to host several hundred people or more on an average day, so safety is always our top priority.”

The drill began with a simulated fire in the upper levels of the hotel. During the casualty combating efforts, the hotel patrons were evacuated and emergency response personnel worked to locate, remove and provide first aid to simulated victims of the casualty.

Upon completion of the drill, representatives from the Azabu Fire Station, Commander Naval Region Japan emergency response forces, and the New Sanno hotel staff members gathered to discuss points of interest and future plans for joint exercises.

“The result of the drill was extremely impressive,” said Commander Naval Region Japan Chief Fire Inspector Michael Dionne. “The staff of the New Sanno hotel and the fire teams of Azabu Fire Station operated quickly and effectively. We look forward to continuing our working relationship and supporting them in any way we can as they support  us.”
