Mr Rancadore, known as The Professor, was detained after a fresh European Arrest Warrant was received from Italy.
The warrant alleges the 65-year-old has an outstanding sentence of seven years to serve for "participation in Mafia association between 1987 and 1995".
Mr Rancadore is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later.
Last month, he won a battle against extradition from the UK to Italy, when a judge threw out an appeal against a ruling that prison conditions there would breach Mr Rancadore's human rights.
District Judge Quentin Purdy made his decision because the Crown Prosecution Service missed a deadline to lodge an appeal against the initial ruling.
