A cute little place for fancy grilled cheese and good coffee! I thought all they'd have in here would be a typical croque monsieur (grilled cheese & ham), their menu has great non-pork options and even lists veggie ones. All their cheese comes from Murray's so you know you're going to bite into the good stuff!
I had the Mr Hugh (goat cheese & orange marmalade) and it was delectable. I love any cheese and marmalade combo so I knew I was onto a winner. While we didn't have it, we were both very tempted by one that had Nutella in it! That, I will have next time! They brew La Colombe coffee, which only means you're going to have a great cup of joe. It's all quality stuff in here!
A good amount of seating upstairs, perfect to catch up with friends. I loved that while there were a lot of people chatting, it never felt loud or busy. The staff are friendly and were helpful when my friend couldn't make up her mind on which croque to get.
Best part of it all was that my friend and I noticed the Anais Nin art work and found out she had leased the building in the 1940's! Thus why the sandwiches are named after her various lovers. We loved that we were dining in a little bit of cultural history!

While I was only here to grab a cup of coffee for a semi-business meeting, what I saw here charmed me enough to want to return!
This cute little cafe/restaurant tucked in a quiet street near Union Square specializes in croque monsieurs and related items for around $7-8. Everyone who was there seemed to order one, along with their delicious coffees. Next time I'll be sure to try one!
I only ordered an ice tea, and for $2.50 for a small, I expected that they would have some liquid sugar. Yes, they had honey and sugars you can add yourself. But those are really difficult to melt in an iced drink. Not sure why they couldn't sweeten my iced tea. Next time I won't get an iced tea from them.
They have a decent sized seating area upstairs. Another good place to hang out! -

The sandwiches are very good, as are the sides, salads and soups. I went with a friend who lived in Paris for several years, and he confirmed that the Croque Monsieur is as authentic as you are likely to get in NYC. They are a hearty size, too. I frequently wind up saving half for later.
Don't believe the reviewers who complain about the price: $10 for a sandwich of this quality plus a fresh side is a bargain. You want a $5.00 sandwich? Head to Subway. -

I love a good croque as much as the next guy, and I couldn't resist stopping by a shop devoted to such a savory sandwich.
Always indecisive, I let the sweet woman with the French accent decide between the Mr. Eduardo (Bresaola, Bechamel, Smoked Mozzarella & True Oil for $8.75) and the Mr. Gore (Portobello Mushroom, Sundried Tomatoes, Pine Nuts & Coach Farm Goat Cheese for $7.25). She leaned toward the latter, and I always trust someone that suggests the cheaper option, even if it is healthier.
Mr. Gore was a great little sandwich with a large amount of goat cheese and other fun ingredients on grilled country bread. It was actually a bit healthier than I would've liked; unfortunately, it's an inconvenient truth that without butter, a croque is never going to be as decadent.
However, it was still tasty, the service was quick and friendly, and I had a nice, if not mind-blowing lunch. I'll try the Cuban next time to see what's really good. -

Delicious... quaint...and charming, La Maison du Croque Monsieur is my idea of a perfect lunch spot in NYC. From the dark wooden tables, to the artsy yet simple decor, and the lovely sign greeting you out front... I'm practically taken back to my favorite city in the world- Paris, France. On that note, excuse me while I daydream... ooh la la la laaaaa.
Believe me when I tell you: you're getting a bang for your buck. These are gourmet sandwiches with top quality ingredients, pressed to perfection and filled with flavor. I tried the Mr. Joaquin aka The Cuban and it was amazing. I can't wait to try the others because their menu sure is tempting.
I also tried their fresh brewed iced coffee and was impressed.
For a little over $10 bucks, I left full and satisfied. I'll be back for sure. -

The mme anais is breakfast heaven. I got mine with gruyere, but you can pick any cheese. While the bechamel and egg were fantastic, it was the bread that did it for me. Fresh and tasty, fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and hearty enough to withstand such a loaded sandwich. Pair this with a cup of coffee and you are set!
I didn't get to check out the upstairs area, but the downstairs space is nice for people watching.
The service is speedy and friendly, the food is hot and fresh, and the ambiance is indeed charming, as Marina R said.
Definitely worth a visit! -

New York, NYWhat a quaint sandwich shop
once you walk in, it almost feels as if a french song should come on and greet you-- , there are mirrors and art work everywhere, and there is this nice and relaxed silence in which everyone is eating their sandwiches and having low key conversations. It is quite nice.
when I asked the employee which sandwich she recommended, she said the the "Mr. Edurado which came with smoked mozzarella cheese, truffle oil, and salted beef. The sandwich was pretty crispy in itself and the contents were good.
My friend ordered the "Mr. gore"-- and to tell you the truth her sandwich was pretty delicious, I liked it more than mine. The sandwich came with portabello mushroom, goat cheese, pine nuts and sun dried tomatoes-- yum!
ps they serve La columbe coffee - which is another plus!
