NYC Sports Clubs Midtown East

What is Zumba Yoga, is what I want to know.

This place ( New York Sports Clubs) is all over Manhattan

Interesting on how different sites get such widely different reviews--place on East 34th here had none but another very close to it on Madison Avenue gets really pretty good reviews

I joined this gym so I could have a place to go when I am in town.  I loved it here... the staff for the most part are friendly.  Spin classes with Lynn are awesome (love her music!) I usually go during off-peak hours, so it's never a problem getting equipment.

So far, this is the best NYSC I've been to in Manhattan. The space is pretty wide and open, especially the free weight area. I'm not a fan of the dumbbells, but that seems to be a given with NYSC.

I was also a fan of the ab workout area in the back of the lower level. Lots of different machines.

Keep in mind I was here on a Friday afternoon at around 2:30. So your mileage may vary during peak hours.

I used to like this gym but when I came lately there's some giant grass thing in the middle of the weight area occupying over a third of the weights, with some big ad to take classes in this area.  No thanks, the god damn membership is already too much money.  So much for weights.  I wish I could turn myself into a New York City girl and just do cardio because they have plenty of those machines.

I come here every workday (M-F), and some weekends, and have a pretty good understanding of this particular NYSC's positives and negatives. On the upside, you've got lots of equipment, spacious walled-in showers, an upbeat training staff, and relatively long operating hours. On the downside, you've got the clientelle and cleanup staff.

After being a member of NYSC for nearly 3 years, I've decided this place has to hold the award for most eclectic, obnoxious, and occasionally creepy clientelle. I've spent long runs on the treadmill listening to people yell into their cellphones without getting off a machine, waited for a weight bench that someone else was "occupying" as he alternated between 3 other machines or, worse, used it as a stretching and workout mat, and regularly waste around 10 minutes hunting down certain weights, kettleballs, etc. that had been left somewhere completely illogical (in the corner next to the treadmills? Really?).

That's just on the gym floor. In the locker room you get all the whistlers, self-proclaimed tenors, cross-shower conversationalists, creepy cell phone "texters", grown adults hacking up loogies or blowing their nose on the shower floor, etc. And it's always covered in towels! Towels everywhere! Towel Wasteland! There are towel bins every three feet--are people in the gym so lazy that they can't throw their own towels in a towel bin? And even if not, where's the cleanup crew to follow up? Why are there always 3-4 empty soap/shampoo bins? Why were two of the hairdryers broken for two weeks and why was the other so filled with lint that it only worked under threat of failure during that period?

I love the training staff, facilities, and equipment here. Unfortunately, it's ruined by the members. Then again, this is New York--creepy crazy guy is ubiquitous, and in a creatine and propecia fueled environment like the gym, you've got to expect a few weirdos at all hours of the day.

This New York Sports Club location is the quintessential three stars: A-OK. NYSC is the equivalent of taking Megabus on the road to Fitnessville: crowded and funny-smelling, with unhelpful staff and occasional machinery breakdowns. But when you're in New York trying to get from Point A to Point B relatively cheaply, what else can you do? Standards are for rich people.

That said, some NYSC locations sink to Fung Wah levels, and it should be noted that this location is not plagued by mold, theft, or rampant lechery as some other locations seem to be. The main floor as well as the locker rooms are reasonably spacious. It does get crowded after work, but if you're a morning exerciser, as I am desperately trying to be, you'll have the whole place (including weights) pretty much to yourself, and you can watch Saved By the Bell (8:00-8:30 am) on the personal TV screen attached to your cardio machine.

Have you ever seen those commercials with the meatheads walking around saying, "I lift stuff up and put them down," or "Hey, bro! Drinking the bro-tein, bro?!"  Well, this is the gym they are parodying.  The trainers heavily out-number the customers, and so they kick you off the equipment because they are using five machines in rotation.  Or they are trying to target you as their next client.  Even then, they also don't understand why you don't want to have a body that is full of steroid-induced muscles, packed so tight that you don't have a neck.  This is a physical therapy clinic that became a gym that still wishes it were a physical therapy clinic.

Also, the workers who workout here don't heed their own sign on the wall that reads, "Do not drop the weights."  Thanks to them, a 25 lb weight nearly hit me.

Lastly, shady billing practices.  Verrrry shady indeed!  Just sayin' . . . it's a joint lawsuit waiting to happen.

This NYSC is one of the nicer ones in the area.  It's a rather large one too.  When you first walk in, you go up to the main desk in the middle.  There are several offices to the left and to the right is a section choc full of cardio machines including the newer treadmills with the "NYSC Network" set up on them allowing you to watch videos and create personalized playlists (as well as TV).

The upper floor has some private training areas, though I confess I have yet to actually go up there and explore.  Downstairs is where the studios and weight equipment is located.  When you go down the stairs, the women's locker room is to the right while the men's is to the left.  There's tons of equipment.  I've been there at the 5pm rush hour period and still managed to get a workout in with minimal waiting.  You'll have a bit more waiting time on cardio machines however as mini-lines tend to form during the busier hours.

The trainers and staff here are quite friendly and helped me locate some of their equipment when I first started going to this branch.

The men's locker room is slightly grungy, but I've come to expect that from most locker rooms.  There is a steam room and plenty of showers with fairly large stalls.

I have enjoyed my workouts at this branch and plan on going back often.

It ain't cheap, but it's a damn good gym.  The staff is friendly and helpful (and always happy to try and sell you on a personal trainer - I'm not THAT out of shape people (am I? (oh jesus (I hate myself (I need to get to the gym (I'm AT the gym))))))

It's huge, and it has some state of the art craziness like a system that tracks your runs on treadmills and elipticals and then emails it to you all while charging your ipod.  Plus, it may be expensive, but it lets you go to any of the NYSC's, which makes it that much harder for you to come up with excuses not to work out.

I loved this gym so much because on the upper floor, it has alot of cardios and the lower floor it has alot of strength training machines. With free barbells. Also, it has a couple of studio classes so peoples can have their classes at. The showers are good with lots of space and high water pressure. I have tried 86th street nysc and 91st street nysc and i did not like it. I would consider you guys to come to this gym on 36th street and madision if you wanted to.

This review is for the Monday boot camp at 12:15pm  The instructor is amazing, what a great way to start the week.  Ive been going every Monday since the beginning of the summer now, and I feel more toned already, and feel great about myself every time I go.  I've tried multiple boot camps and body conditioning classes all over Manhattan, and I gotta say this one is one of the best.  He pushes you, without being over the top, but also lets you go at your own pace, so you don't feel inadequate or embarrassed if you can't do some of the exercises, and he's always there to explain them if he sees you are having difficulty, I love this class, highly recommend it!

Nice NYSC gym.  This place is really spacious, with a giant first floor for cardio machines, and a giant basement floor for weight room and women's locker room.  I came in after work hours (around 5:30pm) and I actually didn't have to wait for a cardio machine!  It did start to pick up after 6:00pm though.

The women's locker room was not bad.  The lockers are wooden, but I did have issues with the lighting - it's EXTREMELY dim.  Also, there are like "sub-sections" of the locker room where there are benches, but sometimes these sub sections get kind of clustered when it's busy hours.  I am pretty fond of the shower though - it's bigger than most NYSC showers, and there is a hook on the inside of the shower, so if you're a nervous person like me, you can just change in the shower easily instead of parading around naked to your locker (which  I am too chicken to do).  Whew!

I'm pretty impressed with this gym.  If I'm in the area, I'll be sure to use the gym again!

This NYSC is in a great location, easy to get to & easy to hop on the train after a long workout to get home asap..or.. to get a drink afterwords :))
With KTown right around the corner, it's the prefect pre-eating gym!

They also have great Yoga(Vinyasa) classes with my favorite instructor for NYSC.

This NYSC is also very clean with a working sauna room ;-)

I come to this NYSC about twice a week & enjoy it.

Plus there are pretty views on Madison Ave with all the beautiful buildings and a starbucks right next door to get your pre-workout green tea or post-workout coffee. :)

This location is a keeper in my books!
