The Fire Department is seeking a "person of interest" who appears to have tossed a cigarette at the Chamber of Commerce building in St. George before a fire Saturday that caused significant damage.
The person wanted for questioning is described as a male, wearing jeans, a dark-colored shirt and a backpack, according to an official statement issued by the Fire Department. No other descriptive information was provided.
The Fire Department released a video that officials say shows the man appearing to discard a cigarette while walking past the Chamber building at 130 Bay Street in St. George. He's walking with a companion, when he pauses, appears to pull an item from his mouth, and makes an overhand throwing motion toward the Chamber building.
A Fire Department spokesman could not provide an exact time when the video was taken.
Those with information may call a 24-hour hotline at (718) 722-3600.
Twelve units and 60 firefighters responded to the blaze on Saturday, which started just before 1 p.m. and was brought under control about a half hour later.
No one was in the building at the time, and no one was hurt, but a bookkeeper's office that housed paper files and the Chamber's computer server sustained significant damage.
