The presence of homeowners and bystanders is fairly common at all but the most remote of fire scenes.
And, as is all too clear from this video, those individuals are more than prepared to critique our job upon arrival.
At the end of the day, we are protecting the lives and property of residents and all property is personal. With this in mind, check out the video and discussion points below:
  • Even with a small crew, what should be included in a department's SOP on engaging the home or property owner upon arrival?
  • How does that engagement play into scene size up?
  • How should firefighters interact with the home or property owner after the fire to ensure that owner knows what happened and why?
  • What are the pros and cons of using the PIO to deal not only with the media, but with the public too?
