Friday, October 2, FDNY Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, Chief of Department James E. Leonard and many officers, Firefighters and former members of Engine Company 95 and Ladder Company 36 celebrated 100 years of dedicated service to the community in Manhattan. The Fire Department began building the firehouse in the growing neighborhood 1913 and it was opened in 1915.

“A new FDNY firehouse meant you were protected, it meant there were Firefighters here 24 hours a day who would come to your aid in a moment’s notice - that love shown by this community was as evident 100 years ago as it is today,” said FDNY commissioner Nigro. “That’s the way it’s been here on Vermilyea Avenue for a century, since the first day the commitment and dedication of the FDNY moved in.”

On Saturday, September 26, FDNY held the last of 12 Summer Block Party community events celebrating the Department’s 150th anniversary outside the quarters of Engine Company 95 and Ladder Company 36.

Hundreds of New Yorkers flocked to the firehouse to see demonstrations, learn more about fire safety and to tour FDNY apparatus, including the FDNY150 Fire Truck and Ambulance.  Those attending took part in free compressions-only CPR classes and learned more about careers within the FDNY.

“I was here Saturday for the Block Party - you guys did an unbelievable job. Just to see you interact with the community, the kids - I always tell people that our firefighters are the best ambassadors,” said Chief of Department James E. Leonard. “For a hundred years, firefighters have been coming through these doors and each generation did its part – and each group of people left it so much better.”

“This firehouse has become such a part of my life,” said Captain Frank Occhiogrosso who has been with Engine Company 95 since 2002. “Sorrow and joy - we all go through it together.”
