A man who suffered critical stab wounds during an assault in midtown early Thursday is being identified as Spencer Stone, one of the heroes who stopped a terrorist attack aboard a train bound for Paris in August.
Officers were called at 12:46 a.m. Thursday to the 2100 block of K Street where they found a man with multiple stab wounds in his torso.
Officers initially thought the man would not survive the stabbing. However, once he arrived at the hospital, medical staff was able to stem the bleeding and he is expected to survive.
The Air Force Times reported that they learned in an e-mail from the Air Force that Stone had been stabbed:
"A1C Spencer Stone has been transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury," Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Karns said in an email in Air Force Times. "The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. He is currently in stable condition."
The Air Force Times said that Airman Stone had been stabbed in the chest four times.
Detectives are investigating the stabbing. There have been no arrests and police as yet have no description of the attacker.
Stone, Alex Skarlatos and Anthony Sadler are three friends who were hailed as international heroes after thwarting a gunman armed with an assault rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in August.
Everybody send prayers out to the stone family today

The assault does not appear to be hate crime, said police spokeswoman Officer Traci Trapani. Sacramento police declined to identify the man stabbed.
