Fire Razes Greenpoint Hardware Store, Upstairs Residents Displaced
(Gothamist)
100 firefighters from 25 units responded to a two alarm fire in Greenpoint at approximately 12:45 a.m. today, at the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Calyer Street. The fire gutted a ground floor hardware store which is now, in the words of one neighbor, "a black hole."
An FDNY spokesman said the fire was under control at approximately 2:20 a.m. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries fighting the blaze, which also caused severe damage to several residential units on the second floor. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Adjacent buildings have also been evacuated as investigators assess the extent of the damage, according to the Buildings Department. A Crunch gym location at 825 Manhattan Avenue has also been closed "until further notice." An email sent to gym members states that "it appears that the fire was contained in the neighboring building however the gym is filled with smoke and it is unsafe for members and staff to be inside or in the area."
We'll update as more information becomes available.
