Mecca: Khamenei demands apology

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei today called on Saudi Arabia to make "excuses" after the drama of Mecca that left hundreds dead Thursday,including 144 Iranians according to a latest report published in Tehran .
"The Saudi leadership, instead of passing the buck, should apologize to the Islamic community and the bereaved families, to accept their responsibility in this terrible accident and fulfill their obligations," said the Iranian leader, in statements reported by the official IRNA news agency. "The Islamic world has many issues, the death of over a thousand people in this accident is not a small matter," said Ayatollah Khamenei.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also criticized Saudi Arabia for his lack of cooperation."Unfortunately, Riyadh does not provide the cooperation needed to investigate the situation of the disappeared, transfer the victims' bodies and help the wounded," said Rohani during a meeting with Secretary General of the United Nations in New York Ban Ki moon, according to Iranian state television website. He asked the "United Nations to remind the government of Saudi his homework."
Also in New York, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir had estimated yesterday that "the Iranians would have been better to do than to politically exploit a tragedy that touched people who were watching their most sacred religious rites."
According to Iranian officials of Hajj, there are now 144 Iranian dead, 85 injured in hospital and 323 missing. The previous record was 136 dead and 344 missing.
According to official figures provided by Saudi Arabia, there are 769 pilgrims of different nationalities killed and 934 injured in the stampede on the stoning site in Mina stelae near Mecca. But Iranian officials have said in recent days that the death toll was much heavier and approaching 2,000 dead.
