STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— About 50 firefighters responded to a minor explosion inside the library on the St. John's campus Saturday night.
At approximately 9 p.m., a telephone pole on Howard Avenue caught fire and the manhole cover near the pole blew, which then led to the explosion in the library, according to the fire chief at the scene.
One of the interior walls of the library was cracked and the exterior wall is bowing slightly, he said.
There is no electricity in the library and nearby Spellman Hall.
There were no students on campus and there were no injuries, the chief said.
There were no residential power outages caused by the incident, a Con Edison spokesman said.
Con Edison was on its way to the scene to repair the pole and the Buildings Department was also on site.
