More than 500 Polish military reservists have been recalled to the colors for immediate exercises lasting several weeks, amid
concerns that an ongoing Russia/Ukraine conflict might affect Poland though the Polish authorities say that the call-ups are “routine”.

According the Defense Ministry’s statement the exercise is “conducted in line with plans to check the operational and mobilization readiness in the Armed Forces in 2015, and stems from the need to accumulate well-trained reserve troops.”
General Bogusław Pacek, adviser to Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak told Polish broadcaster TVN 24 that such an operation, where reservists are obligated to reach a given military unit within hours, is “the perfect test” of their readiness to perform.

The reservists were summoned to the military unit in Tarnowskie Gory, southern Poland.

Pacek said that military leaders were not informed about the whereabouts of the unit beforehand so as to ensure reliable results of the test.

Polish army can call up men aged between 18 and 60 with no military experience to take part in compulsory army training, under new regulations governing who can be drafted into uniform. Under previous draft rules, the armed forces could only call up personnel who had served in the military.

The legislation, signed into force by PM Ewa Kopacz is the latest measure in Poland designed to improve the capabilities of the country’s armed forces.
