UPDATE: INJURED MN FF RETURNS HOME

CBSMIN Video
Friday, March 13, 2015    Ryan Sabo, the Gibbon volunteer firefighter injured in a fire on February 16, was released from North Memorial Medical Center on Friday, February 27. “We are relieved to finally be here and excited for Ryan to continue his healing process in the comforts of our own home and surrounded by those who love and support him,” wife Nickie wrote in a post on CaringBridge.

She reported that the staff had been commenting positively about Sabo’s progress during the last week of February. They had encouraged the Sabos to start thinking about at-home care and therapy.

There was no timeline as to when Ryan would be released, so the Sabos were pleasantly surprised when he was given the “okay” to go home on Friday afternoon.

TUSCON FD RE-WRITES SOPS TO INCORPORATE MODERN FIRE BEHAVIOR

ISFSI Video
Friday, March 13, 2015    Tucson firefighters have been training to use new firefighting techniques that only a handful of departments across the country have had the chance to learn.More than 600 firefighters in the department completed training in the new techniques over the past two months.

"Firefighters can do things wrong, and there's a science behind it," said Capt. Barrett Baker, a department spokesman. "All of the crews have come out to do it, because the training on these new techniques has to be hands-on."

Last May, more than 550 firefighters from 177 departments nationwide attended training called Spartanburg Burns, in South Carolina. Four members of Tucson Fire had the opportunity to explore the science and data behind new techniques for using water and controlling air flow as a way to improve firefighting and firefighter safety.

The training included burning several vacant homes.

The techniques, first applied by New York firefighters, are based o... [ more ]

FF FALLS FROM WINDOW AT MA FIRE

WHDH Video
Friday, March 13, 2015   One firefighter was injured in a three-alarm house fire in Worcester early Friday morning. The flames broke out at a two-family home on Tahanto Road around 3:30 a.m. Friday.

A neighbor took photos of flames shooting from a second floor window when crews arrived.

"We heard a loud boom and he ran and looked out a window," said neighbor Naomi Haaker.

The family on the first floor told firefighters that they had not seen the family that lived on the second floor, so crews entered the building to find the second family. The second-floor family had used a back door to exit the building and when the fire intensified, crews were recalled from the building.

One firefighter fell from a second-story window when he missed the ladder, but he fell into a bush and a pile of snow below.

"He hit the trees and he hit the snow and that kind of helped him out a little bit. If there is a good part to the snow, that's it," said Deputy Chief John Sul... [ more ]

SCBA PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED AS ONE FACTOR IN CT FIREFIGHTER LODD INVESTIGATION

Friday, March 13, 2015   One of the alarms that should have warned Fallen Hartford firefighter Kevin Bell that his air tank was running out of air was not working properly when he died fighting a fire in October, the federal government has concluded.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health inspected two tanks, which fire professionals refer to as "cylinders," after the Oct. 7 fire on Blue Hill Avenue. The Courant obtained the report Friday. Hartford Fire Marshal Roger Martin confirmed Friday that the second cylinder in question belonged to firefighter Jason Martinez, who suffered serious injuries in the fire.

The office of the chief state medical examiner previously ruled Bell died because his cylinder ran out of air. Neither cylinder had air in it when they arrived at NIOSH, the report indicates.

The 20-page report raises questions about the conditions of the 10-year-old breathing apparatus the men wore that night. Among the conclusi... [ more ]

FIREFIGHTERS FIRST DUE...WITH SO FEW

YouTube Video
Friday, March 13, 2015   Please take time to watch the below video. If there has been a recent example of how critical firefighter staffing is on the first alarm...this would be it. Keep in mind that's not necessarily the fault of the firefighters-who like most firefighters, do the best they can. Leadership. Be it at the political, administrative or the operational level have a responsibility to educate the community on what level of service they can expect...and what costs there are to impact the levels of service.

This isn't tough stuff, gang...but so many communities "rest assured" that behind those bay doors are a katrillion firefighters that will come running to save the day when their stuff is on fire. You know and we know, that isn't always the case. In some places - and not just rural areas - but heavily populated suburban metro areas, the apparatus MAY or MAY NOT get out in time to matter. In some places, that's almost always the case.

How ma... [ more ]

Friday, March 13, 2015    A Worcester firefighter who fell from a second-floor window while battling a three-alarm house fire may have been spared more serious injury by a snowbank.
The firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries and released. He was reaching for a ladder when he fell from the window of the two-family home Friday morning.
Deputy Chief John Sullivan says the 19-year veteran was trying to escape the building from the second floor when he fell, but was cushioned by the snow.
All the occupants of the home were able to get out safely.
No names were released. The cause remains under investigation.
Firefighters were called to the home at about 3:30 a.m. and arrived to find heavy fire coming from the rear of the building.
