FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE MORE CANCER THAN MOST

WTHR video
Tuesday, March 10, 2015    Joel Johnston, who has spent his career fighting fires, is now fighting for his life. He was diagnosed just weeks ago at the age of 44 with Stage 4 cancer throughout his body.Though he's never smoked a cigarette, IFD Capt. Mark Rapp coughed during our interview with him because he, too, is battling cancer.

"There is no cure for this cancer," he said. "The best option I have is remission."

The likely cause is the 10 days Rapp spent at Ground Zero. As part of Indiana Task Force One, he was involved in recovery efforts after 9/11. Even after his diagnosis, Rapp said he would have still made the decision to go to Ground Zero and would have become a firefighter.

Cancer has become an occupational hazard for those in the fire service.

“Off the top of my head, I can think of six people...six firefighters who have some form of cancer,” said IFD Captain Tim McDonnell, himself a cancer survivor who heads up Indiana's Firefighter Cancer Surv... [ more ]

HIV POSITIVE FIREFIGHTER ALLEGES HARRASMENT

Monday, March 9, 2015   After 10 years of trying, Stephen Kloster joined the Fire Department in 2001. But five years into what the San Francisco native hoped would be a long career, he fell extremely sick.Constantly lethargic and losing an enormous amount of weight — he dropped from 240 pounds to 140 — tests revealed the reason: Kloster was HIV-positive.

His health and T-cell count recovered well enough for him to return to duty in 2007. That's when the other trouble began. His positive status became common knowledge with his fellow firefighters, some of whom heaped abuse on him for having HIV, he said.

"They wouldn't allow me to cook, they'd ostracize me," Kloster said of his co-workers. "They'd make jokes, they'd say I was gay, that my girlfriend was a man."

What Kloster describes as a steady stream of discrimination — some of it observed by and perpetuated by officers in the department — culminated last summer when he was not assigned to a new firehouse after a p... [ more ]
