DISASTERS

A Whole Corner of the East Village Is Completely Gone

What was a bustling East Village street corner just yesterday is now a smoldering pile of rubble. An apparent gas explosion at 121 Second Avenue led to a horrific fire that damaged four buildings, and ultimately caused three of them—191, 121, and 123 Second Avenue—to collapse. According to data collected from PropertyShark, the collapsed buildings held a total of 15 apartments and seven commercial spaces (no. 119: eight units; no. 121: four units; no. 123: three units). Building no. 125, which Mayor Bill de Blasio said is "very seriously damaged by fire," has 26 apartments. In a press conference this afternoon, the mayor said that the investigation "will take days," and they will not be able to confirm the source of the explosion until they can access the basement of no. 121, which is currently impossible because of the large amount of debris.

new space for some sh0p/kaufman/poon POS
So utterly destroyed. It must have been an old block and brick building with wooden floors. Reinforce concrete or a steel frame might have left something standing ..happy to hear nobody was killed.
@ironworker: the corner building was a very fine brick building with ornate brickwork, limestone lintels, and an intact cornice. a slice of real new york.
most importantly, a couple of people are still missing. all in all a terrible tragedy.
@Lo_Pan: Yeah, I agree, these were certainly some of the nicer/more unique tenements in E. Village.
The city should require redevelopment to faithfully rebuild the original building facade designs and then additional floors can be set back above.
sigh people know your fact
this is in the east village historic district
whatever is built will need to go through a LPC review process.
123 was original a grand federal mansion in it day
A bunch of the surrounding buildings, too, were evacuated -- and are probably filled with soot and smoke stench, with most belongings spoiled....
wow...that's some major devastation. so very sad. the corner building was quite lovely. Lucky not many people were home. During the wee hours of the night this could have killed dozens.
Yes, that is too bad. I'm really sad about this. valuable site destroyed fby fire! Who owned these buildings? WHere they a xo-op condo or rent stablized builldings?
What's up with all of the nonsensical comments here? It is human survival that is important and the fact they survived and how they rebuild their lives, as well as the livelihood of business owners and employees, and a few lost precious personal belongings! It is not about the damn buildings .. or what will replace them or their facades .. and certainly not about the possible loss of rent stabilized or rent controlled units. Many of your comments make me want to belch and vomit !!!
Uh, it's a real estate blog. Everyone is being respectful of the personal loss.
@NYC.ME: People can be concerned over multiple things at the same time, wow!
Well, however it came into being, it's 'developer porn' now!
...And it's giving developers from here to China a woody. Too much?! Too soon?!
