FDNY Swears in 8-Year-Old with Cancer as Junior Firefighter

FDNY members gathered on Nov. 17 to welcome the Department's newest member, 8-year-old Ryan Zinna.

The boy from Port Jefferson Station, NY, is battling cancer, and said his one wish is to be a New York City firefighter. He was sworn in as an Honorary Firefighter by Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, Chief of Department James Leonard and First Deputy Commissioner Robert Turner.

Joined by his parents, Sharon and Darren Zinna; brother, Kyle; grandmother, Karen Zinna; teacher at Boyle Road Elementary School, Anne Popielaski; and numerous FDNY staff; the boy took the Oath of Office.

He then was presented with a badge, bunker gear and more gifts before he left to spend the day at Engine 265/Ladder 121/Battalion 47 in Queens.

“You are clearly a brave young man and we need brave people to help us here at the FDNY,” Commissioner Nigro said. “You are now a part of our FDNY family.”
