Members of the FDNY gathered in celebration at the FDNY Headquarters on September 5, as 24 paramedics were promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

“Our promotion ceremonies, along with our graduations, are truly the happiest days in this Department,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “You each contribute to making this Department successful every single day, working to keep New Yorkers safe and make a difference on every tour.”

Chief of Department Edward Kilduff added, ““It is the role of EMS that brings people back to life and gives people the chance to survive. I have no doubt that with you as new lieutenants in EMS, this team is going to be stronger.”

Paramedics take an examination when applying to become lieutenants. “I’ve been a paramedic for 12 years,” said newly promoted Lt. Gregg Brady. “I felt it was the right time in my life to move forward in my career, and it feels great to be here today.”
“It’s a wonderful feeling,” added newly promoted Lt. Nadra Blelis. “There was a lot of anxiety prior to this moment, and it’s good to have my family here to support me.” Lt. Blelis has served as a paramedic for seven years.

This is the largest promotion of EMS officers this year, following three earlier ceremonies in February, April, and June. The newly promoted members represent nearly 350 years of experience with the Department, and will be assigned to various units throughout the city.

“You are the leaders of tomorrow,” Chief of EMS Abdo Nahmod said. “You are serving the future.”
