Firefighters Rescue Dog from Apartment Fire Firefighter John Sommeso and the rescued dog. FDNY firefighters saved a dog from a fire in Brooklyn on Apr. 14. They responded to a call for a fire on Linden Boulevard at 1:45 p.m., when searching for victims in the fire, firefighters came across a small dog lying in the hallway. The dog was lethargic and breathing heavily, most likely due to the heavy smoke condition in the fire apartment. Firefighter John Sommeso, Ladder 174, who has rescued three pets during his 10-year career with the FDNY, carried the dog out of the apartment and passed him to firefighters who took him downstairs. EMS members gave the dog an air mask and once the fire was under control, the dog was alert and standing on the street corner. The members of Ladder 123, including Lt. Thomas Zuhlke,  took the dog back to their quarters where they cleaned him and will care for him until his owner is able.
