New Yorker's: NYPL Needs Our Help

The following is an email I received today about helping keep the New York Public Library Going...hope it transfers well here

Dear Friend,

Help us send 20,000 letters telling Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, and the City Council to support our Library.

For every person who takes action, we'll deliver a bookmark—inscribed with your name and favorite book—to City Hall!

Join me in telling the new mayor and City Council that New Yorkers depend on our Library.

Right now, Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, and the City Council are making their first big decisions about their vision for our city.

As a librarian, I know that their choices will have a profound impact on my work and the people I serve every day.

I've dedicated more than 15 years at The New York Public Library, providing services that keep our city great—through free access to books, after-school programs for kids, and quiet spaces available for anyone, young or old, to dream and explore.

If you care about our city having those things, please don't wait to tell our city leaders. For every person who signs the letter, we'll deliver a personalized bookmark to City Hall.

We'll be delivering your letter and your bookmark this month. Will you help us reach 20,000 signatures by January 23?

Help us send a mountain of bookmarks from every reader, scholar, thinker, and library lover in this city. Click here to tell Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, and the City Council that you want them to value The New York Public Library as much as you do.

You probably already know that The New York Public Library has a long history of serving our city with free books, author readings, classes, homework help, English as a Second Language classes, and more. And demand at our 88 branches has been growing dramatically, which is why we've worked so hard to provide more books, more classes, more tech training, and more after-school homework help.

You may also know that keeping all of it running has meant yearly budget battles.

With a new leadership at the helm and a new vision, I hope the city will help us keep up with these increasing demands. And we hope to deliver thousands of bookmarks to City Hall, representing the thousands of New Yorkers who agree. This is what we want from Mayor de Blasio and the new City Council:
  • Support for the daily work of NYPL's network of 88 branches
  • A renovated central branch library that provides longer hours, additional public space, and more resources for children, teens, teachers, and job seekers
  • Capital funding necessary for the Library's infrastructure to update elevators, furnaces, roofs, and more
As a reader and lifelong learner, I think our city officials need to make sure that our Library is a priority.

I'm making sure Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, the City Council, and our other new leaders know how important the Library is to me by taking action. Will you join me and e-mail your bookmark to City Hall in support of the NYPL before our deadline of January 23?

Take a few moments to tell them that you are a New Yorker, and you want to see them support the Library.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

Theresa Myrhol
