Pylones Grand Central

I am not the kind of person to be shopping at a store like Pylones so here we have to rely on the taste of others entirely..

Willy Wonka opened a trinket toy store and it is in GCT.

Go, waste some time, play, buy a key chain robot or a lego iPhone speaker....giggle like a 2 year old as you wind up that toy in the corner. This is a place to get lost for an hour while you wait for your train.

With time to kill, I ventured to Pylones checking out what it's all about.  Bright vivid colors with rubberize Lego blocks raise above the surface.  Weird finds are at Pylones where I encountered a book "How to Interpret Rap Slang Lyrics" and "What's Your Poop Telling You" among key chains, rubberized vibrant colorful notebooks of useless mundane weird objects and novelties.  Perhaps Gen Y would like this sort of mundane weirdness objects as the 20, 30 and 40 somethingers regard Pylones as wasted space in one's home.  Overpriced indeed.

Beware.  Enter this store, and you can EASILY come away with over $100 in trinkets you didn't know you needed.

From quirky Fred Flare nesting doll measuring spoons to a picture book of Boo the pomeranian, weenie dog salt and pepper shakers, or an Italian glass bead ring...you can get some pretty sweet and unique gifts at Pylones.

BONUS: If you spend over $100 (or you'll have to check it may be different denominations) you get free gifts!  After buying a book on translating rap songs, and some jewelry, we got two cute pig keychains, sealed in an orange plastic bag.  Nice touch.

I've never seen so much weird crap in my life all in one store... This is the type of store that you hit up when you have a last minute gift to buy. This location is convenient since it's inside Grand Central. So you can pick some stuff up and get on the train.

The selection of items range from wallets, toys, notepads to puzzles and bottle openers. The only thing that separates this location from the rest is Grand Central. Nothing too different. Same crap in every store.

I had never heard of Pylones until Christmas, when I received the best gift: a tiny iPod speaker that resembles a Lego piece. Yes, you heard me right - an iPod speaker, and it looks exactly like a Lego. I wish I could buy alot of them, just so I could build me a Millennium Falcon made of Lego.

So imagine my surprise when I was walking thru Grand Central and I saw Pylones. Yes, it's actually inside Grand Central now, isn't that great? Granted, it's not as huge as the one in the west village, but they still have alot of great items.

    iPod speakers? check
    Bookbags? check.
    Pencils and pens? Check
    T-shirts and clothing? check

I'm telling you, I know where i'm going to get all of my christmas shopping done in a few months. So at least y'all who are expecting something from me will know where I got your present from.

I don't *need* an overpriced, hand-painted, enameled-handled hammer. Or the overpriced matching thermos. Or the overpriced matching pillbox. Or the overpriced matching jumprope...but it's great to know that when I do, I'll know where to go.

Now as for the witty cards, battery-operated disco rings and wind-up marching robot pencil sharpeners - those are a necessity

It's cute! It's colorful! It looks like a candyshop!

I've trained myself to ignore places like this, because inevitably they're all full of useless crap I don't need even if it's really cute and I want it for no justifiable reason. But I got the most useful kitchen device since the coffee mug here -- and that's my silicone tea infuser spoon.

Years ago, I switched to a french press for coffee because it makes better coffee AND creates no waste via bleached paper filters that have to be chucked out. But when it comes to tea, I was still using disposable filter bags for my bulk tea. Then recently, my tea filters shot up 20% in price, so I looked around for alternatives. Pylones has these spoon-shaped, reusable infusers for $9.50/ish, after tax. That's about the same as a 3 month supply of tea filters in my household. So as long as I don't lose this cute little sucker, it'll pay for itself quickly.

It's no secret that the products at Pylones are ridiculously cute, fun, colorful and creative. It's also no secret that it's overpriced. BUT, it does make for great gifts. Every single product in their store could be a conversation starter if you were to have strangers over to your home.

My friend got me salt & pepper shakers from Pylones as a housewarming gift. They are awesome (see photo)! The salt one says "cocaine" on it and the pepper one says "speed" on it. It's subtle but so creative. Not only is it practical but it's funny, which makes for a great gift. I love them!
