Hotel Grand Union

This is another one of those renovated old hotels that people stay at mostly for their close-in Midtown location, I believe.

I will just give a sampling of reviews here...I have absolutely no idea what critical Yelper's will find wrong, but I can imagine--well, well, well, people seem to accept it for just what it is and only the last review here is a real sour one...

I got to check in at 1 pm upon arriving in town a little early into town. The room is old, but was clean. The TV is a old CRT tube style, the lighting is fluorescent, the bed sheets are very hospital basic, and there is a window unit for AC. I visited in March, so it thankfully wasn't too warm or cold that I felt the need to test it. The radiator was keeping the room very warm, and I wasn't sure how to turn it down, so I cracked the window a bit at night to make the room more comfortable.

There is shampoo, conditioner, and soap provided despite what I've read in some other older reviews. The wifi is good speed and strong connection.

My room is situated near the elevator and the door didn't keep out much sound. Fortunately, it wasn't very noisy during the night.

Even though the TV was old, there are lots of channels.

I was able to store my luggage in the lobby luggage room after checking out.

Not fancy, but for the price, the location is great. After my stay, I received an email with a survey and a code for 10% off a future stay.

We arrived early and we were able to store our luggage in the luggage room. The hotel has an excellent location, right near the subway. The room was clean and the free breakfast was a plus. I would stay here again!

I think my husband and I got one of the renovated rooms for (taxes included) around $140, and we were very impressed. For that price at that location, we thought it was very nice. It's very close to the subway, too.

Free breakfast (high quality bagels & danishes, coffee), free wifi, fridge, tv, newly tiled bath, plenty of soaps, clean room, coffee maker - we were very comfortable. Plus, they have a luggage room, so we could store our luggage before check-in and after check-out while we sight-saw.

Only real complaint was the florescent lighting (and our room had no natural lighting because the window faced an alley), but overall it worked well for us.

My wife and I stayed here for Six nights in May . We booked through http://easytobook.com and which we had no problems with. check in was quick and easy.

The room itself was nothing special, but was more than adequate. Afterall we were in NYC and apart from a few hours of sleep everynight and a daily shower or two, we didnt spend much time in the hotel.

The elevator was pretty slow so we used the stairs most of the time.

We had a room in the front of the building which afforded us a great view of the Empire State Building. I had read reviews saying the rooms in the front of the hotel were noisy - we were on the 6th floor and didnt find this to be the case.

The hotel is about 50 metres away from the subway station were you can get the 6 train. For visitors to NYC dont be freaked out by the subway. we were catching everywhere. An app like HopStop is handy too.

I would stay here again and i would reccomend this hotel to anybody unless they were extremly fussy or wanted to hang out in their room all day

Stayed here Feb 2010, booked it through http://Expedia.com.

    1) Price was great!!

    2) Location was perfect; Midtown between Madison Ave/Park Ave. The 4
and 6 subway is three doors down.

    3) Rooms are small but clean, remodeled, and have cable TV.

    4) Business center in the lobby is clean and bright with an employee always at the front desk.

    5) V. Parking 1/2 block away.

If you need somewhere clean and well maintained to get a comfortable rest and take a good shower, this is the place. But if you're the traveler that doesn't get out and only stays in the room the entire time they're in NYC, then I can understand this place is not for you.

I was very happy with my stay and I would do it again...

    Excellent location, wonderful price!!!!!

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Union Hotel in July 2009.  We could not have been more happy with the stay.  First of all, the rates at this hotel were incredible.  No place nearby had anywhere near the rate we got to stay here.

The location was absolutely perfect as well.  We were just outside of Koreatown and a short walk to Times Square.  The subway had two stops within one block of the hotel entrance.

As far as the cafe in the hotel, the majority of patrons were new yorkers, rather than tourists - out of the many places we ate at, it was by far one of the best for a simple breakfast of coffee and a bagel.

We gave it four stars, rather than five, because it truly does not have any amenities - bare minimum on towels, soap, etc... (but they do provide an iron, and board).

However, the reason that we came to NY was to experience the city - not the hotel.  Thus, we just needed a comfortable place to lay our heads at night and get a good rest - we didn't come to New York to vacation in our hotel room.

This will, without a doubt, be where we stay in the future!

(Also, across the street is a place called Artisanal Bistro - a cheese and wine bar - which I highly recommend!)

The hotel is located near the NYU hospital complex.  The room was clean and quiet although light on amenities.  Towels were thin and no soap in the bath.  A cost effective stay for ZZZ and cleanup.  Not a place to hang out in.  Expedia booking provided for a 15% discount and was simple.  Reservation was avail upon check in without any issues.  Wi-Fi was slow although available. The hotel appeared to have coffee and bagels in the am but I did not partake.

Its hard to complain about an inexpensive hotel in NYC but Grand Union Hotel is absolutely not worth it.  It literally has NO amenities (not even a closet in the room) and the double rooms are tiny even by the usual city standard.  They don't provide enough towels for a double room, there was no place to put clothes, the temperature couldn't be controlled, the bedspread reeked, and the cafe in the lobby has banker's hours.  My college dorm room was more posh.
    Was this review …?
