TripAdvisor's 'Top 10 Cities for Pizza' Is Just Nonsense

Yesterday TripAdvisor released a list of what it calls the "Top 10 Cities for Pizza" in the country and it is ludicrous baloney. San Diego comes in at #1, New York City comes in at #4, and Austin comes in at #5. Chicago and Los Angeles were not on the list at all. (Arguments about whether or not Chicago-style pizza is actually pizza notwithstanding.) TripAdvisor says that it offers "the world's most trusted travel advice," but really it's just crowdsourced nonsense. According to the release, "top spots were determined based on the highest average rating by city for all restaurants that serve pizza." So here are the rankings:
1. San Diego, California
2. Las Vegas, Nevada
3. Boston, Massachusetts
4. New York City, New York
5. Seattle, Washington
6. Austin, Texas
7. San Francisco, California
8. Indianapolis, Indiana
9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
10. Phoenix, Arizona
"TripAdvisor travelers reveal that some of America's best pizza is being tossed on the West Coast, which flies in the face of the common perception that pizza is only a Northeast or Midwest specialty," said Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor. While there certainly is great pizza being made on the West Coast (as Eater's recent pizza heatmap points out), the list just seems way off base.
Many of the commenters quoted in the release are still using New York as the pizza gold standard. One commenter in San Diego writes "the pizza was just as good as being home in New York," while another commenter declares Roppolo's in Austin to be the "Best pizza outside of NYC." And indeed, one recent San Diego pizzeria opened called Amici's East Coast Pizzeria.
TripAdvisor users can basically post whatever they want on the website, though, and they've gotten criticism before for super lax fact-checking. In fact, just last month the website came under fire when a fake prank restaurant was discovered to be the 29th-best ranked restaurant in Brixham, England. Perhaps this list was a prank as well?
