Review from Alonzo H.
Burbank, CAWe got into town very early, 6:45 am, and were only expecting to have our bags held until we could check in later but they said they had a room available right then! Very nice desk staff indeed!
Our room, 1702, was good! Spacious and the bed was comfortable, nice looking room, clean and modern. The bathroom was huge! The only downside was no counter space. I was expecting small rooms and smaller bathrooms, being my first time in NYC, but the room was very large, 2 double beds, it was warm and comfortable.
Yes it was noisy but your in the CITY!!!! The cars communicate by honking, that's the way it is! There is police station on 30th and a fire station on 31st. It's all part of the New York experience! by the way they give you earplugs!
Watched TV once, ya don't need it, it's NYC! Didn't use WiFi cause ya gotta pay for it, just used our phones. Used the stove to make some tea one morning and that kitchen was a pleasant surprise and the fridge was perfect holding our water and wine etc...Elevators worked like a charm, I was surprised because of the past reviews, but there were 5 or more of them and we never had an issue. The place is nice and old but everything we encountered worked and that added to the charm of the place.
Location was great for exploring and right next to Penn Station.
Staff was great and very accommodating! We had a great 3 nights there Valentines/Presidents weekend mid Feb 2013.
Would definitely stay there again! -

Chicago, ILThe manager reached out to me for a recent return trip to Manhattan and for my troubles upgraded me to a remodeled two-bedroom suite. Though my resolution came much later than expected, it was to my satisfaction. That said, it's only fair that I update my original review to let you all know that my experience improved.
All the best,

Review from Adrian Robert H.
Beverly Hills, CAPretty good mid range hotel.
Came to stay here for a few days in Jun '13.
Overall I found this hotel to be a very reasonable value. I stayed for about 5 days. The hotel was booked through the company I work for, so I'm not sure if there were any corporate discounts. Each day averaged out to be close to $200. Although its far from the nicest hotel, I found it to be quite reasonable for what it provided. Most likely I would return.
On the last day, I took over my boss' suite with another co-worker.
The hotel does have a good deal of positives;
- The location is very convenient. It's right across the street from NY Penn station. This eliminates the hassle and expense of having to take a taxi or haul luggage any further.
- Although I don't know of any good places to eat in the immediate area, within 5-10 mins walk, you have The Breslin (at the Ace hotel), The NoMad dining room, Eataly, Shake Shack, and Eleven Madison Park (among others).
- The corner room I stayed in, xx17 was very spacious relative to other hotels within the same or slightly higher price range. Being on a higher floor, there was ample natural sunlight.
- The renovations appeared to be complete by the time I arrived. For the most part, things looked pretty modern, despite it being in an older building.
- Maid service was thorough.
- Unlike the complaints of previous reviewers, I didn't find the lifts to be that slow. I don't recall having to wait more than a minute for them to come up to my floor. I timed the speed of the elevator, and it took less than a second and a half to pass each floor. Its an old building. You can't expect it to zip through 3 or more stories in a second.
- The staff seemed very efficient and friendly.
Things I didn't care so much were:
- The building is not so great with filtering out sound from outside the window and outside the hallway. When I stayed at my corner room, xx17, facing 7th Ave, I could hear all the sirens and honking all night and morning. It was also annoying to hear the doors slam and people yelling from the hallways. This made it difficult to get rest. Fortunately, I didn't hear my neighbors room from next door, above and below me.
For this reason, I'd imagine it would be best to get a room farther away from the elevators, which can also be noisy.
- Note, that when I stayed at my boss' suite xx28 (which faced another direction), the sound from outside wasn't quite as disruptive. I was facing another building and a smaller street. I would probably opt for this next time.
- The renovation strangely enough choose to ignore the lifts. It seemed kinda dingy with old carpet. Some of it was stuck with gum. It was not a big deal, but kinda unsettling.
- Wifi (approx $15 a day) speeds can be inconsistent. At its worst, I used http://Speedtest.net and got 0.4 meg/sec download, yet a very good 2.0 meg/sec upload.
- The lobby area can be a madhouse. Quite a few times there were kids running around unattended and the staff didn't interfere.
Overall this isn't such a bad hotel if you don't mind the loud noises and you don't need something posh or very modern. Other than the lifts, it a clean hotel and pretty well refurbished. Nonetheless, there are limitations as to how much you can do with an older building. Affinia does a good job for the most part.
Would I come back? It'd certainly be on my list, but I'd be curious to check out other options as well. Overall it's not bad and not quite as intolerable as other poor reviews had led me to believe.
