Two more successful prosecutions for the Brigade this week as we continue to drive home the importance of building owners and managers taking their fire safety responsibilities seriously. In a case the judge called "a wake up call" for high rise safety Lewisham Homes were fined £40,000 for failing to maintain fire doors in a Deptford tower block. The flats had been the scene of a fatal fire in 2011. The second case saw one of the UK's largest property groups, Coutrywide, prosecuted for breaking fire safety laws after a fire in a Sidcup sheltered accommodation block. Today marks 70 years since Fireman Frederick Davies was posthumously awarded the George Cross. He died attempting to save two girls from a fire in Harlesden, north-west London.
Fireman Davies, from Shepherd’s Bush, was first on the scene and, upon hearing two children were trapped in the front room on the second floor, immediately began climbing an escape ladder before it was even in position.
