A house fire on Staten Island left a probationary firefighter with severe burns when he fell through a floor on Monday night.
Flames erupted in the basement of 1053 Sinclair Ave. in Woodrow at around 8:45 p.m., quickly escalating to a three-alarm fire, said FDNY Chief of Department James Leonard.
Fifteen minutes after the rookie entered the two-story home, “The fire burned away the support structure, the beams, and he fell into the fire,” Leonard said.
A mayday call went out and a rescue team quickly pulled the firefighter to safety. He was taken to Staten Island University Hospital with second- and third-degree burns.
“The firefighters did what they do,” said Leonard, “[They] got the fire under control.”
