KNOWN AIR LEAK MAY HAVE LEAD TO DC APPARATUS CRASH

Friday, October 9, 2015   A document obtained by WUSA9 indicates Engine 28 had an air leak on the day it crashed into a police car, breaking the arm of a firefighter and hospitalizing a police officer. The 30-ton fire truck relies on air brakes to operate safely.

"It should have been taken out of service we believe there was a braking issue that occurred," said Scott Hudson with the firefighters union said when told about the log. "We're waiting anxiously for the final report."

According to the source, the document is a copy of Engine Company 28's log which details daily issues at the fire house in Cleveland Park ranging from flu shots to schedules for physical exams to maintenance.

"Air leak and valve bracket," the log obtained by WUSA9 states. "Was advised foreman will advise when to come down."

Experts say there are safeguards for brake failures and although an air leak is unlikely to prevent a fire engine from stopping quickly, it should have been determined whe... [ more ]

DCFD DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF NEEDS IMMEDIATE MUTUAL AID-CAN YOU HELP?

Friday, October 9, 2015   I received a message from Deputy Fire Chief Steve Reid of the Washington DCFD (Ret). As the Grandfather of 6 wonderful grand babies myself-I treat his request as an urgent mutual aid request from him, a long time friend of ours. Please do whatever you can and if nothing else, pass this on.

His grandson, Colby James Reid, age 12, woke up one Saturday a few weeks ago complaining of a toothache.  By the following day, his jaw had swollen considerably, so his concerned mother took him to the dentist right away.  After x-rays showed nothing wrong with his teeth, he was referred to an oral surgeon, and by the end of the week, we were sitting in front of an Oncology specialist at Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C., having a conversation that is every parents' worst nightmare.

After much testing and torturous waitin... [ more ]

Ignorance About Suicide Continues

Friday, October 9, 2015   If you want an example of how suicide is still looked at through the prism of ignorance and the attached stigma read this article. An opportunity to educate and help healing begin turns in to an act of defiance? "Glorification" really? Draw your own conclusions and more importantly get involved in your own departments and communities.

MORE LIES/ISSUES FROM DETROIT INVOLVING SCBA

Friday, October 9, 2015   When firefighters dash into burning houses and buildings to rescue people and knock down fires, they wear high-pressure air bottles to breathe. But beginning Tuesday, there weren’t enough life-saving air bottles for each Detroit firefighter to use following the discovery that 173 of the 420 tanks were overdue to be tested in violation of state and federal safety laws.

As required by law, the city removed the uncertified air bottles after Motor City Muckraker revealed the serious and potentially criminal violations Tuesday.

Untested air bottles are dangerous because they can malfunction while firefighters are deep inside a smoke-filled house or building, and the high-pressured canisters can explode.

Second Deputy Commissioner Craig Dougherty, who is in charge of ensuring the equipment is compliant, lied to Mayor Mike Duggan’s office about the severity of the problem, saying only 31 tanks were noncompliant. Since then, Duggan’s office has closely ... [ more ]

FIRE TRUCK IN SINK HOLE IN CANADA

The4KGuy Video
Wednesday, October 7, 2015   Courtesy of www.The4KGuy.com

At 3h am this morning a Longueuil firetruck from the SSIAL (Service de Securite Incendie de l'Aglomeration de Longueuil) was involved in a minor accident when one of its wheel fell through the road and created a sinkhole on its way to a water main break call. The road broke and a large hole of about 1 meter deep formed under the heavy weight of the truck. After the truck had collapsed a fireman climbed down the stairs only to step on another portion of the road which then collapsed as well. His leg went through the asphalt but was uninjured. The incident took place in front of 1818 Kirouac Street at the corner of Laverendrye Street in Longueuil. Fire crews were seen offloading tools, generators, axes and other work effects from the damaged truck and transfer it to another firetruck. Prior to emergency crews arrival, water had already started pouring of the road and into the basement of a nearby house. A garage next to the house was also ... [ more ]
