THE STRAITS TIMES CELEBRATES 170 YEARS

PEOPLE

Seletar Hills estate has its own village chief in the form of Mrs Ginger Tiah. The 68-year-old is involved in, among other things, the production of the estate's newsletter and floral arrangements for weddings at the nearby St Vincent De Paul Catholic church.
In person, Ms Emma Lee looks every bit the smiling, flag-waving National Day Parade (NDP) spectator who charmed television viewers with her eye-catching looks.
Henry Leo's family was killed during the Japanese Occupation. Father Michel Olcomendy, the first archbishop of Singapore, apparently found him on the streets. The orphan would become a houseboy,  picking up skills along the way.

PHOTOS

Gilt and silver; silk and enamel. Finely crafted and lovingly hand-finished, these colourful and varied treasures are the state's tribute to pioneers who built Singapore in the early days.
