Tihange 3 reactor out of action

The Tihange 3 nuclear reactor near Liège has been shut down unexpectedly. According the company that owns and operates the Tihange nuclear power station Engie (the former GDF Suez), the reactor stopped automatically during preparations for maintenance work.

Our region is bracing its self for a summer storm. With temperatures peaking during the afternoon some areas can expect localised storms from around 5pm. As the ground is bone dry, the rain won’t be able to seep in to the soil quickly enough. This means that there is a real chance of flooding.

The Asylum and Migration Secretary Theo Francken (Flemish nationalist) is sounding the alarm. The number of asylum seekers has doubled in July and August. Extra places will be created - both in the short term and the longer term - to accommodate the refugees, who mainly come from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. The aim has been set at 10,000 extra places.

"Belgian Highway Code should be completely rewritten"

Belgian traffic rules are old-fashioned and need a complete update, to such an extent that it would be better to write a new Highway Code starting from scratch. That's according to Karin Genoe of the Belgian Institute for Road Safety (BIVV). The present Highway Code is 40 years old, complex and no longer up-to-date, Genoe argues. She suggests compiling a completely new version which is shorter and better comprehensible.

The bee-eater is back in Belgium!

A brooding nest belonging to bee-eaters was discovered at a construction site in Harelbeke (West Flanders). This was reported by the environmental agency Natuurpunt. The last report of bee-eaters in Belgium was 10 years ago. Bee-eaters living on the European continent have their habitat in southern Europe or near Asia. They are extremely rare in Belgium.

Children injured in puddle containing acids

Two children sustained severe burns when they cycled through a puddle containing toxic waste in the woods in Zutendaal (Limburg province). The waste probably comes from a lab where synthetic drugs are being manufactured. Two other children and an adult sustained small injuries.

Pukkelpop opts for transport by ship

12/08/15 - The Pukkelpop music festival ordered much of its backstage goods to be delivered by ship. The furniture was delivered along the Albertkanaal this morning. It was a push in the back for the inland shipping industry, which has to make a conversion as bulk loads are decreasing. Ships have to focus more on containers now. Bridges across the Albert Canal are being raised to serve this purpose.

12/08/15 - There is debate going on between two organisations defending the interests of commuters - TreinTramBus and Test-Aankoop - and the Belgian rail company NMBS. The former receive complaints from angry passengers that have to pay a surcharge on the train because they can't present a valid ticket, after finding out the ticket machine was out of order. However, the NMBS claims there is hardly any such problem, with 98.5% of these automats working in recent weeks.
