22 YEAR OLD EMT DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY FOLLOWING LIFE SAVING ATTEMPT IN PENNSYLVANIA 

Friday, August 14, 2015    Samantha Agins’ legacy was "If you can help someone, you have to try," according to her mother, Paula Agins.

Agins, 22, of Tobyhanna, died Tuesday after suffering a series of strokes after trying to save another woman’s life while working as an EMT at the New Jersey Jaycee Camp, the Pocono Record reports.

Samantha had aspirations of becoming a physician’s assistant, was a senior at East Stroudsburg University with a 4.0 GPA and on her way to achieving her dreams of helping others, her mother said Thursday.

When a woman at the camp suffered a cardiac arrest, she jumped into action.

“Sam started giving her CPR,” Paula Agins said. “She hooked up the (automated external defibrillator), and it kept telling her to push harder. She never wanted to quit.”

Samantha Agins kept trying to save the woman’s life until the ambulance showed up.

Thursday, August 13, 2015  What started off as a slow day at Myrtle Creek Helibase, turned active when a Stouts Creek Firefighter had to be rescued by Air rescue Systems from ashland. Only NBC5's cameras captured that moment thanks to a reconnasince helicopter crew. A crew member is seen dangling in the air as he saves the firefighter who sustained a knee injury.

Oregon Department of Forestry's Kevin Crowell is the Helibase Manager, he makes sure the choppers are safe in the air and when they land.

Crowell said, "They're all tied together."

Dozens take off at the Myrtle Creek Airport whether it's for support missions, rescue missions, or reconassaince they're here ready to go.

Reconnaissance crews are responsible for scoping out the territory. A lot of it now void of trees and vegetation.

They plan with crews on the ground how the fire will be fought each day.

LODD UPDATE: NOW AT LEAST 2 DOZEN FFs KILLED IN CHINA 

Thursday, August 13, 2015    Two huge explosions tore through an industrial area where toxic chemicals and gas were stored in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin, killing at least 44 people, including at least a dozen fire fighters, officials and state media said on Thursday.At least 520 people were injured, more than 60 of them seriously, the Tianjin government said on its Weibo microblog, and the People’s Daily newspaper said four fires were still burning.

Wednesday night’s blasts, so large that they were seen by satellites in space, sent shockwaves through apartment blocks kilometres away in the port city of 15 million people. Internet videos showed fireballs shooting into the sky and the U.S. Geological Survey registered the blasts as seismic events.

Vast areas of the port – the 10th largest in the world – were devastated, crumpled shipping containers were thrown around like match sticks, hundreds of new cars were torched and port buildings left as burnt-out shells... [ more ]
     

 

LODD UPDATE- REPORTS NOW OF 9 FIREFIGHTERS KILLED LODD-CHINA 

Thursday, August 13, 2015   Nine firefighters have been confirmed dead after two massive explosions tore through an industrial area in the northeast Chinese port city of Tianjin, state television said this evening.State media reported earlier that the blasts late on Wednesday had killed at least 17 people and injured as many as 400. It was not immediately clear whether the nine firefighters were among the 17 people already reported dead.

The Beijing News reported earlier that authorities had lost contact with 36 firefighters at the scene of the blasts.

Here is a surveillance camera video from this weeks violent apparatus vs apparatus crash in Miami, Florida. The intersection crash injured numerous Firefighters and civilians.

As you will see, the rescue ambulance (transporting) crosses the intersection without stopping for the red traffic signal-and strikes the side of the responding engine company, going on a separate run.


Could have been worse.


Could have killed some folks or some members-or-as happened in Ohio a few years ago, when the apparatus actually struck and killed two civilians, who were actually relatives of the firefighter driving that apparatus. You never know who's on the roadway. Stop at red lights and ... [ more ]
     

 

LODD: 4 FFs DEAD IN CHINESE EXPLOSION 

Thursday, August 13, 2015    Massive explosions have hit China's northern city of Tianjin, leaving at least 17 people dead and hundreds more injured.
State media said the blasts happened in a warehouse storing "dangerous and chemical goods" in the port area of the city.
Pictures and video on social media showed flames lighting up the sky, and buildings are said to have collapsed.
Hospitals are reported to be overwhelmed with casualties.
President Xi Jinping has urged "all-out efforts" to rescue victims and contain the fire, Xinhua state news agency said.State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said a shipment of explosives had detonated but this was not confirmed.
The first explosion at about 23:30 (15:30 GMT) on Wednesday was followed by another, more powerful blast, seconds later. Shockwaves were felt several kilometres away.
BBC Chinese Service editor Raymond Li says all indications are that it was an industrial accident.

TX FIREFIGHTER ACCIDENTALLY SETS SELF ON FIRE MOVING GAS CAN AT FIRE 

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    A Tyler firefighter is on the mend after receiving minor burns while responding to a house fire sparked by lightning.
Tuesday evening, Tyler fire crews were dispatched to the 200 block of Dinah Lane around 7 p.m. after flames enveloped the home's garage.

The firefighter, whose name was not released, was moving a gas can away from the flames. The canister disintegrated, igniting the fuel.

A bystander was videoing the scene at the time the firefighter's leg caught fire and he ran from the scene. Another firefighter is shown spraying a hose in the direction of the injured firefighter.

The firefighter had minor burns, but remained on duty after the fire was extinguished, according to a previous report. While the garage was destroyed, the home itself sustained smoke damage.

ILLINOIS FIRE APPARATUS ROLLS OVER WHILE RESPONDING 

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    The Zeigler (IL) Fire Department says a fire truck was involved in a rollover crash on Tuesday morning, Aug. 11 while responding to a fire.
They say all six firefighters on board were taken to an area hospital.
According to the fire department, the truck captain was pinned until crews could arrive to remove her. She was flown via helicopter to a trauma center as a precaution.
They say all personnel involved have been treated and released.
The fire department posted on Facebook that they are "beyond thankful for all of your prayers and support. We are especially thankful for our brothers and sisters in public safety who came to our rescue."
They said, "The community support and outpouring from our public safety brothers and sisters across the state has been a blessing. Thank you all again."
The fire truck was the only vehicle involved.

UPDATE: MIAMI APPARATUS CRASH

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    Firefighters ended up in the hospital after a fire truck and a rescue ambulance collided in Miami Tuesday afternoon.Authorities said they crashed near Northwest 12th Ave and 14th Street.

Firefighters said their fire engine, from nearby station 5, was heading North on 12th avenue responding to a fire, when it crashed into the fire rescue truck from the same station that was transporting a grandmother and her two grandchildren to University of Miami Hospital.

Daniel Bosch said he was in fire truck when it crashed.

“We just crashed,” the boy told CBS4’s Lauren Pastrana. “The windows broke and we just started spinning around.”

The boy, whose little sister was also hurt, said he needed four stitches.

“The next thing you know I see the guy flying this way. I didn’t know what happened and I banged my head. I was bleeding,” he said.

DETAILS EMERGE ON FF INJURY AT RAILROAD TRESTLE IN OR

Wednesday, August 12, 2015   Details have been released about how a Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue firefighter was injured while attempting to help put out a large fire that destroyed a railroad trestle and burned through Monday night and into Tuesday in Sherwood.The firefighter's name was not released, but in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, TVF&R said that the firefighter was working on a berm near the rail line at about 6 a.m. when two logs that had fallen from the trestle shifted, rolling down the hill and pinning the man's leg.

FIRE DEPARTMENTS & BODY ARMOR ( Ohio) 

Wednesday, August 12, 2015    As violent calls increase for firefighters and paramedics, more jurisdictions are beginning to add an extra level of protection.Departments in Clayton, Vandalia, and Harrison Township have begun equipping crews with body armor to protect responding units into potentially dangerous scenes.

Battalion Chief Sean McNeil with the Harrison Township Fire Department said about a fourth of the department has vests available to them, and have been helpful on more than one occasion.

“We’ve actually had instances where we’ve been treating a patient and the actual shooter was in crowd near the medic unit,” McNeil said.

McNeil adds other national stories have shown needs for protection for first responders.

“It happened in Florida, where police officers at a house on fire engaged the gunman with the fire department in the middle of it,” he said.

ENGINE vs. AMBULANCE RESPONDING CRASH IN MIAMI FL - 12 INJURED

Wednesday, August 12, 2015   Rescue crews rushed firefighters to the hospital after a fire truck and a rescue ambulance collided in Miami Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities said they crashed near 12th Ave and 13th Street.
Firefighters say their fire engine from nearby station 5 was heading North on 12th avenue responding to a fire, when it crashed into the fire rescue truck from the same station that was transporting a grandmother and her two grandchildren to University of Miami Hospital.
The impact was so severe, it smashed the front end of the rescue truck and caused the fire engine to spin, and then flip over on its side.

SECRET RECORDINGS REVEAL SAFETY CONCERNS ABOUT HARTFORD CT FD

Wednesday, August 12, 2015   In secret audio recordings obtained exclusively by Fox CT, Hartford Fire Chief Carlos Huertas reveals concerns with a lack of resources and cooperation with City Hall during an hour-long conversation with Deputy Chief Dan Nolan.
“There’s so much s— I want to change. I got a list that you wouldn’t believe. And, I’ll tell you right now, I’ll present it to the mayor and the council and they’re going to say no f—— way in hell,” Huertas said in the profanity-laced dialogue.

In the recording, Huertas references an issue with building inspections in the city. He tells Nolan that he and Deputy Chief Roger Martin, the fire marshal, have been vocal that buildings are not being inspected, presenting a possible safety hazard.
