On this day 20 years ago, a 33-year-old British
mother of two became only the second person ever to reach the peak of Everest–the world's highest mountain–unaided, without oxygen or help from sherpas. Alison Hargreaves also soloed all the great north faces of the Alps in a single season—a first for any climber— including the famously difficult Eiger North, which she scaled while pregnant. (1995)
