The University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) is poised to start a study next month of heart and cancer risks forfirefighters, according to a news report.
The News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1EF1nEJ) that the study aims to take a rigorous, scientific look at how working in a realistic fire environment affects the body.
The report said that researchers plant to send 36 firefighters into 12 different burn scenarios at a 1,200-square-foot ranch-style house on the Fire Service Institute campus from June 14-30.
The firefighters will be tested and monitored before, during, and after the fires, IFSI Director Gavin Horn told reporters.
Partners in the study will include Underwriters Laboratories Firefighter Safety Research Institute and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the report said.
