Four buses burned down and several others were vandalised by anti-Israel graffiti at an Arriva bus garage in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen last night.
The police are still investigating whether the buses were set ablaze on purpose, and they wouldn’t speculate on whether the incident was connected to the controversial advertisements calling for a boycott of goods from Israeli settlements, which Movia removed from 35 of its buses last week.
“I can say we have encountered some vandalism out there where there is written ‘Boycott Israel – Free Gaza’,” duty officer Lars Vestervig said according to DR Nyheder.
The Movia adverts were removed from the buses after a majority of the board voted against sticking with the ads, which were paid for by Palestine advocate organisation Dansk-Palæstinensisk Venskabsforening.
Witnesses wanted
Fathi El-Abed, the head of Dansk-Palæstinensisk Venskabsforening, fears that young Palestinians are behind the bus vandalism.
“I hope it’s not someone with a Palestinian background that is behind this,” El-Abed said. “It’s a criminal act and should be treated as such.”
No arrests have yet been made. Police are currently looking for witnesses.
The four destroyed buses – which all had full tanks of diesel – were worth 2.5 to 3 million kroner each.
