Breaking News

The Night Sky

  • The 2015 opposition of Saturn occurs in the constellation of Libra on May 23rd. Southern Hemisphere observers are favoured owing to the planet's southerly declination, but on nights of calm seeing much detail will still be seen in modest instruments from the British Isles. Saturn is conveniently situated a little over 10° — the span of a fist at arm's length — to the upper right of Antares in Scorpius. The ringed planet is highest in the sky around 1 am BST on May 23rd, reaching this position half and hour earlier with each passing week. AN graphic by Ade Ashford.
Often referred to as the Jewel of the Solar System, Saturn reaches opposition on May 23rd and is currently best placed for observation during 2015. Despite the planet's southerly declination, its glorious ring system is favourably tipped in our direction with the northern hemisphere on show.
  • Venus currently lies near the position occupied by the Sun at the June solstice in the constellation of Gemini, has a declination exceeding +26° and is close to its greatest easterly elongation from the Sun — all these factors conspire to keep Venus above the horizon for a long time after sunset in mid-May for Northern Hemisphere observers. How late can you see it from where you live? AN graphic by Ade Ashford.
